It BurnedPsalm 56:8

I Went And Stood In The Bathroom

This message is for the woman who left the room and cried when the meal failed, who wants to fail at this in front of somebody and stay in the room

Four minutes with the tap running.

That is what it was. You said something about checking on something, and you went down the hall, and you shut the door and put the tap on so nobody would hear, and you stood there and cried about a pan.

And the part that has stayed with you is not the crying. It is that you were crying about food, in a bathroom, while adults you love sat in your kitchen waiting.

Then you washed your face and did the thing with the cold water, and came back out and said something bright, and everybody went on with the evening.

Nobody knows. That is nearly two years ago and nobody in the world knows about those four minutes except you.

And it is not really about that night any more. It is that if a pan can do that to a person, then something in that person is wrong, and you have been quietly carrying that conclusion ever since.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

That was genuinely awful and nothing here is going to tell you it was an overreaction.

Nobody cries about a pan. People cry about being seen failing at something they have already decided they are bad at, in front of people whose opinion they care about, having tried hard. That is not a small thing and your body was entirely correct about the size of it.

I Went And Stood In The Bathroom

Put thou my tears into thy bottle

There is a line in the Psalms about tears being collected, and the strange specificity of it is the point.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalm 56:8, King James Version)

Put thou my tears into thy bottle.

It is an odd image and it is meant to be. Tears are the least substantial thing a body produces. They are gone in a minute, and nobody keeps them, and the whole picture is of somebody treating as precious a thing that by definition disappears.

And the verse asks for them to be kept without ever asking what they were about.

You are in a verse that collects tears without asking what caused them, and crying in a bathroom about a pan has never once been a category of tears that was excluded. Psalm 56:8 keeps them in a bottle and never once asks the reason, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who put a tap on so nobody would hear.

And notice the first clause, because it is the one that does the work.

Thou tellest my wanderings. Tellest means counted. Somebody is keeping an accurate record of the small movements of one person's life, including the walk down a hall to a bathroom, including the four minutes, including the coming back out.

That walk is in the count. It is not too small to have been noticed.

You have a walk down a hallway that got counted, and four minutes nobody in the world knows about has never once been four minutes nobody saw. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has carried a secret for two years, and Psalm 56:8 counts the wanderings and keeps the tears in the same breath.

The conclusion you drew was the wrong one

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction, and it is about the sentence that has been running since.

The conclusion was: if a pan can do that to me, something in me is wrong.

Here is what actually happened in that kitchen. There had been an effort nobody else could see. There were people in the house whose good opinion mattered. It was the end of a long day. And then a thing went wrong in front of the one audience you cared about, and a body under that combination does exactly what yours did.

That is not a fault. That is the predictable output of caring, effort, tiredness and an audience, and anybody with all four in a kitchen at once is about four minutes from a bathroom.

You were at the ordinary end of four things happening at once, and a body that responded exactly as bodies do has never once been evidence of something wrong. Psalm 56:8 keeps tears without auditing their cause, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who drew a conclusion about herself in a hallway.

And here is the second half, which is the way out. That evening is sealed. Nobody knows. And a thing nobody knows about keeps its original temperature indefinitely, which is why two years have changed nothing at all about how it feels.

The only thing that reliably cools one of these is saying it out loud to one person, and the surprise, every time, is that the person laughs in recognition rather than in judgment, because a remarkable number of adults have stood in a bathroom with a tap running.

You have a sealed evening rather than a permanent one, and something two years old has never once cooled on its own while nobody knew. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman about to tell somebody, and Psalm 56:8 asks for the tears to be kept rather than explained.

What this week is, with one person

So here is the assignment, and it is not cooking. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you.

One person. Somebody who was not in that house, and preferably somebody who has cooked for people themselves.

And tell the whole thing, including the bathroom. That is the hard part and it is the entire point, because the ruined pan on its own is a small story and everybody has one. The bathroom is the part that has been carried, and the bathroom is what needs to be out of your head and in the air.

You are telling the part that was actually heavy rather than the part that is easy, and four minutes said out loud have never once weighed what they weighed while nobody knew. Psalm 56:8 treats tears as worth keeping rather than worth explaining, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a woman saying the word bathroom.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: let them laugh, and let them tell you theirs. They will have one. Almost everybody who has ever cooked for people has a version of that hallway, and the laugh you will hear is not at you, it is the sound of somebody being relieved to find out they were not the only one either.

You are finding out that you were never the only one, and a thing two people have both done has never once stayed the private evidence of anything. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with two women who have both stood in a hallway, and Psalm 56:8 puts the tears in a bottle and the wanderings in a book.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has carried four minutes for two years.

You are still the same woman you were at six o'clock, and one ruined meal has never once been a verdict on you. Nothing here calls that an overreaction, because nobody cries about a pan and that was never what it was. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who collects what a woman cried in a bathroom, and Psalm 56:8 says put thou my tears into thy bottle.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have a walk down a hallway that got counted, and four minutes nobody in the world knew about has never once been four minutes nobody saw. Psalm 56:8 tells the wanderings and keeps the tears in the same breath, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that conversation this week.

One person. Including the bathroom.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Four minutes with a tap running, you were two years ago and you are not a diagnosis. Psalm 56:8 says put thou my tears into thy bottle, so by the Holy Spirit I tell one person this week, including the bathroom, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Conclusion I drew in that hallway, you said something in me was wrong and you were reading an ordinary body. Psalm 56:8 keeps tears without ever asking what they were about, and by the Holy Spirit I am done treating four minutes as evidence.
  3. Father, You asked for tears to be kept in a bottle and for the wanderings to be counted, and You never once asked what any of them were about. Your word says thou tellest my wanderings, so by Your Spirit I say it out loud this week, and I let somebody laugh, and I hear theirs.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
