Feeding OthersLuke 10:41

I Clean For Three Days First

This message is for the man who cannot invite anybody without three days of preparation first, who wants to feed somebody without it being a performance

Three days of cleaning for two hours of people.

That is the ratio, and once you have seen it written down it is difficult to unsee. Somebody comes at seven on a Saturday and leaves at nine, and the preparation for that starts on the Wednesday.

And it is not that you are house proud. That is what people assume and it is not it.

It is that there is a state the house has to be in before anybody can be inside it, and the state is not the same as clean. It is a particular condition where nothing in that house says anything about you that you have not approved.

So the drawer that does not close gets dealt with. The thing in the hallway gets moved. The bathroom gets done twice.

And it works, more or less, and the evenings are good. But it costs three days, and three days is a price that only gets paid a few times a year, which means people come to your house about four times a year.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nothing here is going to ask you to have people over with the house as it is.

That is not the assignment and it would be miserable. Nobody is going to tell you that nobody notices, or that your friends do not care about the drawer. What is worth looking at is smaller: whether three days is actually what an evening costs, or whether it is what one particular evening cost once and then became the standard.

I Clean For Three Days First

Thou art careful and troubled about many things

There is a moment in Luke where somebody working hard at hospitality gets a sentence, and the sentence is gentler than it looks on the page.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful. (Luke 10:41, King James Version)

Thou art careful and troubled about many things.

Read the two words. Careful, and troubled. The first is not a criticism at all: she is doing it well, and it is being noticed. The second is the cost, and it is named separately, which means the trouble is not treated as the price of the care.

And the name gets said twice. Martha, Martha. That is not how somebody speaks to a person they are correcting.

You are being spoken to by name rather than corrected, and a man doing something carefully has never once been the problem in a room. Luke 10:41 separates the care from the trouble and says the name twice, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody who started cleaning on Wednesday.

And notice what the one thing needful turns out to be.

It is not a shorter list. It is not a better system, and nothing in that passage suggests she should have been more efficient. The one thing is a person sitting in a room with somebody, which is the thing the preparation was in service of and had quietly displaced.

You have one thing needful rather than a list to optimize, and an evening with somebody in it has never once required the house to be finished first. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who has been pricing a Saturday in days, and Luke 10:41 names one thing rather than a better method.

Where three days came from

Here is the practical half, and it is one observation.

Three days is not a considered figure. Nobody sat down and worked out that this is what an evening requires. It accumulated.

Here is roughly how these accumulate. Once, years ago, somebody came over and something in the house was noticed, or you thought it was, and that was uncomfortable. So the next time, that thing got dealt with in advance. And then something else. And each addition was small and sensible, and nothing ever came off the list, because lists like this have an add function and no remove function.

Three days is about nine years of small additions, and not one of them was ever reviewed.

You were never charged three days by anybody, and a list that only ever grew has never once been a measurement of what an evening costs. Luke 10:41 names the trouble as separate from the care, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man carrying nine years of small additions.

And here is the second half, which is the real cost and is worth saying plainly. Four times a year.

That is what the list has actually bought. The evenings are good, and there are four of them, and there could have been thirty. The list did not protect the evenings. It rationed them.

You have been rationing the thing rather than protecting it, and a standard that keeps people out has never once been the same thing as a standard that welcomes them. The Spirit of God is the one in that house with somebody who has been counting Saturdays, and Luke 10:41 puts the one thing needful ahead of the many things.

What this month is, with one person

So here is the assignment. Invite one person for one simple meal this month and cook the thing you can already make.

One person, not four, because one person is the version of this that does not trigger the list. And the thing you can already make, whatever that is, even if it is eggs. Especially if it is eggs. Nothing here raises the bar, and if you find yourself planning something better then the list has got into the food.

And here is the cleaning instruction, because there is one: two hours. Not three days. Set an actual timer if that helps. Do the two hours, and then stop, and let whatever is left be left.

You are giving it two hours rather than three days, and a house that got two hours of attention has never once been an unwelcoming house. Luke 10:41 calls the care real and the trouble separate, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that house with a man who stopped at two hours.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: do not apologize for anything when they arrive. Not the drawer, not the hallway, not any of it. The apology is the list speaking out loud, and it tells a guest to start looking, and it is the only thing in the evening that could make the house a subject.

You are letting the house be silent rather than introduced, and a room nobody apologized for has never once been the room a guest was examining. The Spirit of God is the one at that door with a man saying nothing about the hallway, and Luke 10:41 puts a person sitting with somebody above every other thing in that house.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has had four evenings this year.

You are able to feed people with what you can already cook, and hospitality has never once been the same as impressing anybody. Nothing here asks you to have people over with the house as it is, and nobody here says your friends do not care. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who separates the care from the trouble, and Luke 10:41 says thou art careful and troubled about many things.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have been rationing the thing rather than protecting it, and a standard that keeps people out has never once been the same as one that welcomes them. Luke 10:41 names one thing needful rather than a better system, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that door this month.

One person. Two hours. And eggs.

Declare this over yourself

  1. List that only ever grew, you are nine years of small additions and nobody ever reviewed you. Luke 10:41 says thou art careful and troubled about many things, so by the Holy Spirit I invite one person this month and give that house two hours in the name of Jesus.
  2. Apology I have ready at the door, you are the list speaking out loud and you tell a guest to start looking. Luke 10:41 names one thing needful rather than a better system, and by the Holy Spirit I am done introducing my own hallway.
  3. Father, You said a woman's name twice and called her careful before You ever mentioned the trouble. Your word says thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful, so by Your Spirit I ask one person over this month, and I cook what I can already make, and I stop at two hours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
