The Knife Scares MePsalm 94:18

I Cut Myself Once And Never Again

This message is for the man who cut himself badly years ago and has avoided the drawer since, who wants to pick up something he is afraid of

Eleven years ago.

You can still see the sink. You can see the color of the water and the particular way the light was, and you can remember thinking, very calmly, that this was going to need somebody else.

There were stitches. There is still a mark, and you know exactly where it is without looking.

And since then, you do not use the big knife.

Not as a policy. Nobody sat down and decided. It is more that your hand goes to something else, every time, and if the only option is the big one then whatever you were going to make becomes something you do not make.

The people around you think it is a preference. You have never corrected them, because the true version would require saying the word afraid out loud about a kitchen tool, at your age, and that is not a sentence a man volunteers.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

This is a real fear and nothing here is going to treat it as a joke.

Something genuinely happened to you. That is not anxiety, that is memory, and a body that flinches near the thing that once cut it is a body working exactly as designed. Nobody is going to tell you to get over it, and nobody is going to explain that it was probably not that bad.

I Cut Myself Once And Never Again

Thy mercy, O Lord, held me up

There is a line in the Psalms about the exact moment a foot goes out from under somebody.

When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up. (Psalm 94:18, King James Version)

When I said, my foot slippeth.

The slip is not denied. The man is not told it did not happen, and he is not told he was imagining it. He says his foot went, and the text takes him completely at his word.

And the holding up is described in the same breath. Not instead of the slip. Alongside it, in the same sentence, as a thing that was going on while the slip was happening.

You are somebody who slipped and was held rather than somebody who slipped and was left, and a thing that genuinely happened has never once been the whole account of it. Psalm 94:18 refuses to argue with a man about whether his foot went and puts the holding in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody who can still see the color of that water.

And notice the tense of it, because it matters for eleven years later.

Thy mercy held me up. Past tense, looking back, said by somebody who is standing up now and describing what was true then even though he could not have told you so at the time.

That is what eleven years gives you. Not the removal of the memory, but the ability to look at that evening and say what else was in the room.

You have something else that was in that room and not only the sink, and an evening you survived has never once been only the worst part of itself. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has not opened a drawer in over a decade, and Psalm 94:18 is a man looking back and naming what held him.

The fear is right about the knife and wrong about you

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction. The fear is accurate about the object and inaccurate about the person holding it.

It is correct that the knife can cut you. That is not a distortion, it is the function of the thing, and a man who treats a blade casually is a man who will eventually need a sink.

Where it goes wrong is the next step, which is silent. The fear concludes that because the knife can cut, you in particular cannot be trusted near it, and that conclusion is doing all the damage. Millions of people who can also be cut use one every day, and they are not braver than you, they simply have not had the evening you had.

The difference between you and them is one memory and not one capacity.

You were given a memory rather than a limitation, and an evening with a sink in it has never once been a finding about what a pair of hands can do. Psalm 94:18 names the slip and the holding together without treating the slip as a verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man whose hand still goes to the smaller one.

And here is the second half, which is the instruction. Nobody is going to ask you to be relaxed about this. Relaxed is what caused the sink eleven years ago, and being slightly afraid of a blade is an excellent thing to be. The goal tonight is not calm.

The goal is slow. Slow is what the fear actually wants and has never been offered, because the two options on the table have always been use it normally or avoid it entirely, and there was a third one the whole time.

You have a third option that was never offered, and going slowly has never once been the same thing as being unable. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen with somebody who is about to go at a speed of his own choosing, and Psalm 94:18 puts the holding right alongside the slipping rather than after it.

What tonight is, with that knife

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately small. Pick up the knife tonight, cut one thing slowly, and put it away.

Tonight. One thing. One cut is enough, and if it takes a full minute then it takes a full minute, and nobody is watching the clock. Put the board flat, put the thing on it, hold it with the other hand well back, and go at whatever speed lets you keep your attention on your fingers. Do not chop. Do not do it the way it is done in videos. There is no technique in this article.

It may be uncomfortable. That is expected, and discomfort is not danger, and you are allowed to feel every bit of it while your hands do the thing anyway.

You are doing this at your own speed rather than at somebody else's, and a slow cut has never once been a worse cut than a fast one. Psalm 94:18 takes a man at his word about the slip, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that board with somebody holding the big one for the first time in eleven years.

Then the second half, which is the one that does the work. Put it away. Wash it, dry it, and put it back in the drawer yourself. Not in the sink for later, not on the side. Your hand goes to the handle a second time, on purpose, when nothing is being cut and there is no task, and that second time is the part that changes something.

You are picking it up twice on purpose, and a knife put away by the hand that used it has never once been the same event as one left in a sink. The Spirit of God is the one at that drawer with a clean knife going back in, and Psalm 94:18 has a man describe the holding in the same breath as the slipping.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody whose hand went to the small one again tonight.

You are able to pick this up and put it down again, and what happened once has never once meant you could not. Nothing here treats that evening as a joke and nothing here asks you to be relaxed. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes eleven years off a man's hand, and Psalm 94:18 says thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were held in that room as well as cut in it, and an evening you survived has never once been only the worst part of itself. Psalm 94:18 puts the holding in the same breath as the slipping, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that board tonight.

One cut. Slowly. And put it away yourself.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sink I can still see, you were eleven years ago and you are not in this kitchen tonight. Psalm 94:18 says thy mercy, O LORD, held me up, so by the Holy Spirit I pick up that knife and cut one thing slowly in the name of Jesus.
  2. Hand that goes to the small one, you are a memory doing its job and you are not a report on me. Psalm 94:18 puts the holding in the same breath as the slipping, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting one evening choose what I hold.
  3. Father, You did not argue with a man who said his foot had gone, and You named the mercy that held him in the same line. Your word says when I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up, so by Your Spirit I open that drawer tonight, and I cut one thing slowly, and I put it back myself.
