It BurnedJoel 2:25

I Have Not Cooked Since That Night

This message is for the man who has not cooked once in three years because of a single ruined meal, who wants to fail at this in front of somebody and stay in the room

Three years, because of one Tuesday.

You could give the date. That is the detail that tells you how much room this has taken up: it was one evening, and there are years of your life you could not date to the nearest month, and you could give this one to the day.

It went wrong in front of people. The specifics do not matter for this article and they matter enormously to you, and both of those are true.

And you have not cooked since. Not once. Not for anybody, not for yourself, not on an ordinary Wednesday with nobody in the house.

That is the part that is out of proportion and you know it is out of proportion, and knowing that has never once helped.

And every so often you almost start. You get as far as thinking about it, and something arrives that is not quite a memory and not quite a decision, and you do something else instead.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

That evening was genuinely bad and nothing here is going to tell you three years is silly.

It is not silly. It is what happens when something hurts more than the situation seemed to warrant, which almost always means it landed on something that was already sore. Nobody here is going to be surprised by three years, and nobody is going to tell you to get back on the horse.

I Have Not Cooked Since That Night

I will restore to you the years

There is a line in Joel about time, and what it offers is unusual enough that people misquote it.

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. (Joel 2:25, King James Version)

The years that the locust hath eaten.

Notice what is being described. Not a disaster, exactly. Locusts are slow. They take a field a little at a time, over seasons, and the loss is measured in years rather than in a single event.

Which is the right shape for this. One Tuesday did not take three years from you. Three years went one evening at a time, quietly, with nothing dramatic happening in any of them.

You are looking at years eaten slowly rather than one night that took them, and three years of small evenings has never once been the same thing as one catastrophe. Joel 2:25 measures the loss in years rather than in the event, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who could give the date.

And notice the word restore.

Not: forget them. Not: they did not matter. Restore is a word that admits something was genuinely taken, which means the verse is agreeing with you about the loss before it says anything else.

Three years were taken. The verse says so first and then speaks about them coming back.

You have a loss that gets agreed with before it gets answered, and years that were genuinely taken have never once had to be described as nothing. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has been told to get over it by people who meant well, and Joel 2:25 says restore rather than dismiss.

What the three years were actually doing

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction.

This has been getting called avoidance. That is not quite what it is, and the distinction matters for getting out of it.

Avoidance is a decision made each time. What has actually been running is simpler and more mechanical: the first evening after, you did not cook, quite reasonably. The second evening, not cooking was easier than deciding to. And by about the thirtieth, not cooking had stopped being a decision at all and had become the shape of your week.

Nobody chose three years. Three years assembled themselves out of about a thousand evenings in which nothing happened.

You were never choosing this daily, and a shape that assembled itself has never once been the same thing as a decision somebody kept making. Joel 2:25 names a slow loss with no single villain in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man who has almost started more times than he can count.

And here is the second half, which is the way out, and it is not a pan. The thing that keeps that evening at full strength is that it has never been told properly. Three years of it being in your head and nowhere else is three years of it keeping the exact temperature it had at the time.

And the first move is not cooking. It is telling one person, out loud, and hearing them laugh, because the laugh is the sound of an evening becoming a story. After that, the pan is a much smaller object.

You have a telling available before a pan is ever involved, and an evening kept in one head has never once cooled in the ordinary way. The Spirit of God is the one with a man about to say something out loud for the first time in three years, and Joel 2:25 speaks about restoration after admitting the loss.

What this week is, with one person

So here is the assignment, and it is not cooking. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you.

One person. Somebody who was not there. And tell both halves: the evening itself, and the three years. The three years are the part that has never been said, because the evening has probably come up once or twice as a joke and the years never have.

Do not build up to it. Do not preface it with a warning about how strange it is going to sound. Say it the way you would say anything else that happened.

You are saying the second half rather than only the first, and three years named out loud have never once stayed the private fact they were. Joel 2:25 admits the years before it says anything about them, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a man saying a number.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: let them laugh at the evening, and let them be surprised by the three years, and do not defend either. Their surprise is useful. It is the first outside measurement this thing has ever been given, and outside measurements are exactly what a private fact has never had.

You are letting something be measured from outside for once, and a private fact has never once kept its size after somebody else looked at it. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with a man and somebody who was surprised, and Joel 2:25 puts the years and the restoring in the same sentence.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who almost started again last week.

You are still the same man you were before that night, and one ruined meal has never once been a verdict on you. Nothing here calls three years silly, and nobody here is telling you to get back on the horse. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who speaks about years coming back, and Joel 2:25 says I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have a loss that gets agreed with before it gets answered, and years that were genuinely taken have never once had to be called nothing. Joel 2:25 uses the word restore, which admits the taking, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that conversation this week.

Both halves. The evening and the years.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Date I could still give you, you were one evening and you have had three years of mine. Joel 2:25 says I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, so by the Holy Spirit I tell one person both halves of it this week in the name of Jesus.
  2. Thousand quiet evenings behind me, you were never a decision I kept making. Joel 2:25 names a slow loss with no single villain anywhere in it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done calling a shape a choice.
  3. Father, You used the word restore, which admits that something was genuinely taken, and You named the years before You said anything about them coming back. Your word says I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, so by Your Spirit I say both halves out loud this week to one person.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
