Everybody drove four hours for that.
That is the arithmetic that has been running since. Four hours each way, several cars, people who took a day off, a house arranged for weeks, and one meal at the end of it.
And it did not work. Not slightly. The whole middle of it, the part everybody had come for, and there was no rescuing it and no time to make anything else.
Everybody was wonderful about it. Somebody went out and came back with things. It turned into a different kind of evening and people said afterward that it was the best one in years, and they meant it, and you have never once believed them.
And there is a particular loneliness in being the only person at your own table who is not enjoying it.
So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.
That was genuinely awful and nothing here is going to skip past it.
Nobody here is going to tell you that it became a lovely evening and therefore it was fine. It did become one and that is true and it is not the point. You had one thing to do for that family this year and it went wrong, and being told the evening was nice afterward does nothing at all for the woman who was standing in that kitchen at four in the afternoon.

Beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning
There is a line in Isaiah about an exchange, and the thing to notice is what gets carried in.
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. (Isaiah 61:3, King James Version)
Beauty for ashes.
It is a trade, and in every trade somebody arrives holding something. What these people are holding is ashes, which is what is left when a thing has burned all the way down, and nobody in the verse is told to arrive with anything better.
Ashes are the entry requirement. That is the whole of what anybody has to bring.
You are welcome with exactly what you have got, and a woman arriving with the remains of a day has never once been the wrong person for that exchange. Isaiah 61:3 has people come holding ashes and nothing else, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who was standing in a kitchen at four in the afternoon.
And notice the phrase the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.
A garment is something put on from outside. It is not produced by the person wearing it, and the verse does not ask anybody to generate it, and heaviness is not corrected or argued with anywhere in that sentence.
Somebody arrives heavy. Something gets put on them. That is the mechanism, and there is no step in it where anybody has to feel differently first.
You have something put on from outside rather than produced from inside, and heaviness has never once been the thing you had to fix before anything else could happen. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has not believed a single kind thing anybody said, and Isaiah 61:3 hands over a garment rather than asking for a mood.
The four hours are the wrong sum
Here is the practical half, and it is one correction, and it is about the arithmetic.
The sum that has been running since is: four hours each way, several cars, a day off, weeks of arrangement, divided by one ruined meal, equals a catastrophe.
Here is what is wrong with it. Nobody drove four hours for the food. They drove four hours for the room. They came to be in a house with each other, which is why the evening worked perfectly well once somebody went out and came back with things, and why they said what they said afterward.
You are the only person who was ever running the food version of that sum. Everybody else was running the room version, and the room version came out fine.
You were running a sum nobody else was running, and four hours in a car has never once been spent on what is in the middle of a table. Isaiah 61:3 counts what people arrive with rather than what they produce, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has not believed anybody since.
And here is the second half, which is the part that is still costing. You have never believed them. Every kind thing said that night was filed as kindness rather than as information, and that filing has been the actual weight.
Here is why it is worth reconsidering. Those people know you. They know the difference between a nice evening and a rescue, and they chose their words afterward in a house where you were standing right there. Believing them costs nothing and you have been paying for not believing them for a long time.
You have testimony you filed as kindness, and people who know you well have never once been the unreliable witnesses in a room. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who could believe them, and Isaiah 61:3 gives without requiring anybody to produce the joy first.
What this week is, with one person
So here is the assignment, and it is not cooking. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you.
One person who was not there. And tell the four hours. That is the part that has to be in it, because the ruined dish alone is a small story and the four hours are what made it enormous, and the four hours are what have never been said to anybody.
Tell it properly, including the part where somebody went out and came back.
You are telling the arithmetic rather than only the accident, and four hours said out loud have never once sounded the way they have felt in your head. Isaiah 61:3 takes people exactly as they arrive, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a woman telling the whole sum.
Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: let them laugh, and then say out loud that everybody told you it was the best one in years and you have never believed them. Say that. It is the actual confession and it is not about food, and saying it is what finally lets the thing be examined by somebody who is not you.
You are putting the real sentence where somebody else can hear it, and a thing believed alone for a year has never once survived being said to one other person. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with a woman saying the true half, and Isaiah 61:3 exchanges ashes for beauty without asking anybody to bring more than ashes.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has not hosted since.
You are still the same woman you were that morning, and one ruined meal has never once been a verdict on you. Nothing here tells you the evening turned out nice and therefore it was fine, because that does nothing for a woman standing in a kitchen at four in the afternoon. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes what a person actually arrives holding, and Isaiah 61:3 says beauty for ashes.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have testimony you filed as kindness, and people who know you well have never once been the unreliable witnesses in a room. Isaiah 61:3 hands over a garment rather than asking anybody to generate one, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that conversation this week.
Tell the four hours. And then the real sentence.
Declare this over yourself
- Sum I have run since that day, you divide four hours by one dish and you were never the right arithmetic. Isaiah 61:3 says to give unto them beauty for ashes, so by the Holy Spirit I tell one person this week and say the four hours out loud in the name of Jesus.
- Kind things they said that night, you were filed as kindness and you were information. Isaiah 61:3 hands over a garment rather than asking anybody to produce one, and by the Holy Spirit I am done disbelieving people who know me.
- Father, You ask people to arrive holding ashes and nothing better than that, and You put the garment on from outside. Your word says beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, so by Your Spirit I tell the whole of it this week, and I say the sentence I have never said.
