I Ruined It With People Waiting

You wanted to leave your own house.

That is the part you have not said to anybody. Not walk out dramatically. Just be somewhere else, immediately, with none of this happening, and for about ninety seconds you were genuinely working out how.

There were people in the next room. They had arrived pleased. Somebody had brought something. And the thing you had been making since the afternoon was ruined in a way that could not be hidden, served, or explained away.

And you stood at that counter and looked at the back door.

What you did instead was produce a sentence. You went in and said something light about it, and everybody was fine, and somebody suggested something else, and the evening happened and was actually good.

And you have not cooked for anybody since, and you have never once told anybody about the back door.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

That was genuinely humiliating and nothing here is going to skip past it.

Nobody here is going to tell you it was funny, or that everybody has done it, or that they will not remember. Those are all true and none of them reaches the man who was standing at that counter. It was awful. That gets to be the fact of it before anything else is said.

A just man falleth seven times

There is a line in Proverbs about falling, and the number in it is doing something that people miss.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. (Proverbs 24:16, King James Version)

A just man falleth seven times.

Seven is not a small number. It is not once, forgivably. It is a pattern, a habit, a thing that keeps happening, and the verse attaches it to the just man rather than to the failing one.

Which means falling repeatedly is inside the description of a good man rather than evidence against him.

You are inside the description rather than outside it, and a thing that went wrong in front of people has never once moved anybody out of that sentence. Proverbs 24:16 puts seven falls inside the life of a just man, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody who looked at a back door.

And notice what the verse does not do between the falling and the rising.

There is no interval. No analysis, no period of being unfit, no waiting to see whether the pattern continues. Falleth, and riseth up again, in one clause, with nothing in between them at all.

You put four years in that gap. The verse does not have one.

You have no interval to serve, and a gap between falling and getting up has never once been in that sentence. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who has not cooked for anybody since, and Proverbs 24:16 joins the falling and the rising with nothing between.

The sentence at the back door

Here is the practical half, and it is about the part that has never been told to anybody.

The wanting to leave is the part that has been carried, and it is the part that got decided to mean something. A man who wanted to run out of his own house over a pan.

Here is what that actually was. The body has one mechanism for social threat and it is the same one it uses for physical threat, and the first thing it offers is distance. That is not cowardice and it is not a character defect. It is a system doing precisely what it is for, in a situation it has no better move for.

And then you overrode it. You did not leave. You walked into a room full of people and said something light with your chest still going, which is the opposite of what you have been carrying it as.

You overrode the thing you have been ashamed of, and a body offering an exit has never once been the same as a man taking one. Proverbs 24:16 counts the rising rather than the falling, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man who walked into that room anyway.

And here is the second half, which is why it is still full strength. Nobody knows about the back door. The ruined food has probably come up once as a joke. The ninety seconds never have.

A thing kept entirely inside keeps its exact original temperature, which is why two years or four have changed nothing. And the only thing that reliably cools one of these is saying it out loud to one person and hearing what comes back.

You have a sealed ninety seconds rather than a permanent one, and something never said out loud has never once cooled the way ordinary memories do. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody about to tell it for the first time, and Proverbs 24:16 puts the rising immediately after the fall.

What this week is, with one person

So here is the assignment, and it is not cooking. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you.

One person who was not there. Tell the ruined food, which is the easy half and will get the laugh. Then tell the back door.

That is the whole exercise. The ninety seconds where you were working out how to be somewhere else. Say it plainly, without the light voice, because the light voice is the thing you have been using on it and it has not worked once in all this time.

You are telling the half that was actually heavy, and ninety seconds said out loud have never once weighed what they weighed while nobody knew. Proverbs 24:16 keeps a just man in the description while he is still falling, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a man saying the true half.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: let them laugh at the food, and let them tell you they have had the back door too. A remarkable number of people have. The laugh takes care of the food and the recognition takes care of the rest, and those are two different jobs and the evening has been waiting for both.

You are finding out that the back door was never only yours, and a thing other people have also wanted has never once been the evidence you took it for. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with two people who both once looked at a door, and Proverbs 24:16 puts seven falls inside a good man's life.
