It BurnedPsalm 103:14

I Snapped At Them Over A Pan

This message is for the father who lost his temper with his children when the meal burned, who wants to fail at this in front of somebody and stay in the room

They went very quiet.

That is the part. Not the shouting, which lasted about six seconds and was not even loud. The quiet afterward, and the way they both looked at each other and then left the room without being told to.

Over a pan. That is what makes it sit so badly. Not over anything that mattered. Over a thing that had caught on the bottom while you were doing four other jobs at the same time.

And they had done nothing. One of them had asked a perfectly ordinary question at the wrong moment and that was the whole of their offense.

You apologized. You did that part properly, half an hour later, and they said it was fine and probably meant it, and everybody went on.

And it still sits there, because a man who shouts at his children over food is a specific kind of man, and you have been quietly checking whether that is who you are ever since.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

That was a real thing and nothing here is going to wave it off.

Nobody is going to tell you it was nothing, or that all parents do it, or that they will not remember. What is going to happen instead is that it gets looked at properly, because a thing that has been carried for a while is usually being carried without ever having been examined once.

I Snapped At Them Over A Pan

He knoweth our frame, he remembereth that we are dust

There is a line in the Psalms about what God knows about people, and it is startlingly physical.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (Psalm 103:14, King James Version)

He knoweth our frame.

Frame is a word about construction. It is about what a thing is built out of and what it can bear, and the verse is saying that the assessment being made of you takes the material into account.

And the material named is dust. Not a metaphor for sinfulness. Dust: the least durable thing there is, which is exactly the right description of a tired man at five in the afternoon with four jobs going at once.

You are known by what you are built out of rather than by one moment of it, and six seconds at the end of a long day has never once been the material somebody is made of. Psalm 103:14 has God remember the frame rather than only the failure, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been checking what kind of father he is.

And notice the image right before it.

Like as a father pitieth his children. The verse compares God to a father who looks at his own children and is moved rather than provoked, which means the tenderness you feel toward those two is the very thing the verse uses to describe how God is toward you.

You know exactly what that looks like. You do it every day. It is being pointed at you now.

You have the tenderness you show them turned back toward you, and a father who knows how to be gentle with his children has never once been outside that gentleness himself. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who apologized properly half an hour later, and Psalm 103:14 uses a father's pity as the picture of God's.

What six seconds is and is not

Here is the practical half, and it is two things.

The first is that six seconds is not a character. A character is what a man does across ten thousand evenings, and there is a very large body of evidence in that house about how those evenings actually went, and every bit of it has been set aside in favor of one Tuesday.

They were not surprised by you. That is worth sitting with. They went quiet because it was unusual, and things are only unusual when the ordinary version is different, and their reaction is itself the evidence you have been refusing to look at.

You were unusual in that room rather than revealed in it, and a reaction that surprised your children has never once been the thing they expect from you. Psalm 103:14 weighs the frame as well as the moment, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man who has been ignoring ten thousand evenings in favor of one.

The second is about the apology, and it is the part that is still open. You apologized for shouting. You did not tell them why.

And children, especially the older one, fill silence with themselves. If a father snaps and then says sorry and offers no reason, the reason a child supplies is almost always about them: I asked at the wrong moment, I was annoying, I should have been quieter. That version is available to them right now and has been since that evening.

One sentence closes it. Not another apology. An explanation: that was about a pan and about me being tired and it was not about you.

You have one sentence available that an apology could not do, and a child left to supply a reason has never once supplied the right one. The Spirit of God is the one in that house with a father and two children who filled in a blank, and Psalm 103:14 names the frame out loud rather than leaving anybody to guess at it.

What this week is, and it is in two parts

So here is the assignment. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you, and say one sentence to your children.

The first part is for you. One person who was not in the house, and tell them the whole thing including the shouting, and let them laugh, because they will, at the four jobs and the pan and the question at the wrong moment. That laugh is what takes an evening out of the sealed category, and it is not a laugh at your children.

You are taking one evening out of the sealed category, and a thing said out loud to one person has never once stayed the size it was inside. Psalm 103:14 remembers what a man is made of, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a man telling the whole of it.

The second part is for them, and it is one sentence, said ordinarily, not sat down for. Something like: you know when I snapped about the pan, that was about the pan and about me being tired, and it was not about you. Then let it go and do not develop it. Children take a sentence like that and put it away in about four seconds, and the putting away is the whole point.

You are closing a blank they filled in themselves, and a sentence said in an ordinary voice has never once needed a serious conversation around it. The Spirit of God is the one in that room with a father saying eleven words, and Psalm 103:14 says out loud what somebody is made of instead of leaving it to be guessed.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been checking on himself since that Tuesday.

You are still the same father you were at five o'clock, and one ruined meal has never once been a verdict on you. Nothing here waves it off and nothing here says all parents do it. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who weighs a man by what he is built out of, and Psalm 103:14 says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have the tenderness you show them turned back toward you, and a father who knows how to be gentle has never once been outside that gentleness himself. Psalm 103:14 uses a father pitying his children as the picture, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that house this week.

One person. And then one sentence to them.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Six seconds at the end of a long day, you are a moment and you are not a character. Psalm 103:14 says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, so by the Holy Spirit I tell one person this week and say one sentence to my children in the name of Jesus.
  2. Blank they filled in with themselves, you have been open since that evening and you close today. Psalm 103:14 names the frame out loud rather than leaving anybody to guess, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting a child supply a reason for me.
  3. Father, You compared Yourself to a father looking at his own children, and You said You remember what we are made of. Your word says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, so by Your Spirit I say the whole of it to one person, and one sentence to them, and I let it go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
