I Eat Standing At The Counter

This message is for the man who has eaten every meal standing up for years, who wants to sit at a table with people and eat

Six years of eating standing up.

Not every single meal. But close enough that you would struggle to name the last time you sat at that table with food in front of you and nothing else happening.

The counter is where it happens. Facing the window, or facing the wall, usually with the pan still on the stove behind you, and it takes about four minutes and then the plate goes straight in the sink.

And it is efficient. That is genuinely true. There is no setting up and no clearing away and the whole transaction is over before it started.

There is a table in that room. It has things on it. Not a lot, and nothing that could not be moved in thirty seconds, and it has been about six years.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nothing here is going to tell you this is sad.

Standing at a counter is what an enormous number of adults do and there is nothing pitiful about it, and any article that opens by feeling sorry for you is not going to be much use for the rest of it. What is worth looking at is narrower: what four minutes at a counter actually gives you, and what the other version costs, because the second number is smaller than you think.

I Eat Standing At The Counter

He sat down, and the apostles with him

There is a sentence in Luke, right before the most important meal in the New Testament, and it is almost entirely about furniture.

And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. (Luke 22:14, King James Version)

He sat down.

That is the detail the verse chooses to record. Not what was said, not what was on the table. He sat down, and the others sat down with him, and that is what the sentence is for.

And it is worth noticing that this was a man with a great deal to do and very little time left, and the thing recorded is that he sat.

You are being shown a man with no time who sat down, and a meal taken standing has never once been the more urgent option. Luke 22:14 records the sitting rather than anything that was said, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody facing a window with a plate in his hand.

And notice the phrase when the hour was come.

The hour. There was a time set for it, and it was waited for, and the sitting is what happens when the hour arrives. It is not fitted around something. It is the thing the hour was for.

You have an hour that could be for something rather than fitted around it, and an evening meal has never once had to be the gap between two other things. The Spirit of God is the one with a man whose plate goes straight in the sink, and Luke 22:14 has a set hour and a sitting down at the end of it.

Four minutes and what it buys

Here is the practical half, and it is one piece of arithmetic.

Standing saves about fifteen minutes. That is the actual figure: laying a place, sitting, eating at the speed a person eats sitting down, and clearing up afterward, against four minutes at a counter.

Fifteen minutes is real, and for six years it has been going somewhere, and the honest question is where. Not into anything, mostly. Into the evening, which absorbs it without a trace.

So what has been bought is fifteen minutes a day of undifferentiated evening, and what has been sold is the only part of the day with a shape in it.

You were buying fifteen minutes of nothing in particular, and a saving that disappears into an evening has never once been a saving. Luke 22:14 records the sitting as the thing worth writing down, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man who could not name the last time he sat.

And here is the second half, which is the part that matters more than the arithmetic. A meal eaten standing does not register as an event.

The body counts a day in a particular way, and things that happen sitting down get counted and things done on the move mostly do not. Which means six years of evenings have, in a real sense, not had dinner in them. The food happened. The event did not.

That is not a sad fact about you. It is a mechanical fact about how days get marked, and it can be changed tonight in about fifteen minutes.

You have an event available rather than only food, and a day with one thing in it that got marked has never once been the same day as one that had none. The Spirit of God is the one in that room with a table that has things on it, and Luke 22:14 puts the sitting at the center of an hour that was waited for.

What tonight is, at that table

So here is the assignment. Lay the table tonight and eat one meal at it with whoever is in the house.

Clear it first. Thirty seconds, and it does not matter where the things go, because this is not a tidying project and the point is the surface rather than the house.

Then lay one place, or however many people are in that house tonight, and lay it properly: a plate, the cutlery, a glass of something. Not a tray. Not the plate carried over to a chair. The table, with places on it.

You are making a surface into a table rather than tidying a room, and thirty seconds of clearing has never once been the same job as sorting a house out. Luke 22:14 puts the sitting down at the center of the account, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that room with a man moving things off a table.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: sit until the food is gone. Not until you are finished, which for somebody who eats standing means about four minutes. Until the plate is empty, at the speed a person eats when they are sitting, which will feel absurdly slow for the first two evenings and then will not.

And whoever is in that house tonight is enough. One other person, or nobody, and a man sitting alone at a laid table is having dinner in exactly the way the word means.

You are having dinner rather than eating, and a laid table with one person at it has never once been a lesser table. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with a plate and a chair pulled in, and Luke 22:14 records a man with almost no time left sitting down.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who ate at that counter again tonight.

You are worth sitting down with, and a meal has never once needed to be impressive to be worth laying a table for. Nothing here calls that counter sad, and nothing here feels sorry for anybody. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts a sitting down at the center of an hour, and Luke 22:14 says he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have an event available rather than only food, and a day with one thing in it that got marked has never once been the same day as one that had none. Luke 22:14 records a man with almost no time left choosing to sit, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that table tonight.

Clear it. Lay it. And stay until the plate is empty.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Counter I have eaten at for six years, you bought me fifteen minutes a day and it went nowhere. Luke 22:14 says when the hour was come, he sat down, so by the Holy Spirit I clear that table tonight and lay it properly in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of finishing in four minutes, you are efficient and you have never once counted as an evening. Luke 22:14 records the sitting down rather than anything that was said, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting dinner be the gap between two other things.
  3. Father, You had a man with almost no time left sit down at an hour that had been waited for, and the sitting is the part that got written down. Your word says he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him, so by Your Spirit I lay that table tonight, and I sit at it until the plate is empty.
