We Eat In Shifts In This House

This message is for the woman whose household eats in four separate shifts, who wants to sit at a table with whoever is there and eat

Four of you and four different times.

One at half past five because of training. One at seven. One whenever he gets in, which is variable. And you, at some point, standing up, usually finishing something somebody left.

And it is not chaos. That is the thing people get wrong about a house like this. It runs extremely well, and the reason it runs well is that you are running it, and shifts are the most efficient possible arrangement for four people on four schedules.

Nobody in that house is unhappy. Nobody is going without.

And you have looked at the calendar for the next month and there is not one evening on it where all four of you could be at a table at the same time.

So the family meal is a thing that used to happen, and it is not coming back on the current schedule, and everybody has quietly accepted that including you.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nothing here is going to ask you to get everybody round a table.

No campaign, no Sunday rule, no rearranging of anybody's commitments. That is not available and suggesting it would just be one more thing on your list that does not happen. The whole of what follows works inside the shifts exactly as they are.

We Eat In Shifts In This House

Breaking bread from house to house with gladness

There is a description in Acts of how a group of people ate, and the detail that matters is the arrangement rather than the feeling.

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. (Acts 2:46, King James Version)

Breaking bread from house to house.

Not all in one place. From house to house, which means small groups, in different rooms, at different times, and the text records it as the normal arrangement rather than as a compromise.

There is a large gathering in that verse as well, in the temple. Both are described, and the eating is the one that happens in scattered small numbers.

You are running the arrangement the text describes rather than a failure of one, and a household that eats in different rooms has never once been the broken version of anything. Acts 2:46 records the eating as happening house to house rather than all together, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has looked at a calendar.

And notice what the verse does say is common to all of it: gladness and singleness of heart.

That is not about numbers. It is about the quality of what happened in each of those rooms, in whatever small group happened to be in it, and it is the only thing the verse actually measures.

You have something available that has nothing to do with how many are there, and a quality of a meal has never once been counted in heads. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody standing up finishing what was left, and Acts 2:46 measures gladness rather than attendance.

Four meals is four opportunities

Here is the practical half, and it is one reframe, and it may be the most useful sentence on this site for a woman in your position.

Four shifts have been counted as one lost family meal. Count it the other way and there are four separate meals in that house every evening, one of you at each of them, and none with anybody else competing for attention.

That is not a consolation prize. Four unhurried conversations with one person each is, by any honest measure, more than one meal where four people talk across each other and somebody is on a phone.

The shifts have been being priced as a subtraction. They are a multiplication and nobody has said so.

You were counting a loss where there were four of something, and a house that eats in shifts has never once had fewer meals in it than one that eats together. Acts 2:46 records the house to house eating as the ordinary shape, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has been pricing her own evening wrong.

And here is the second half, which is the actual cost and is the one worth fixing tonight. In all four of those shifts, you are standing up.

That is the real loss in this house. Not the missing table. The fact that the person who makes every one of those meals happen has not sat down at any of them, and has been eating leftovers on her feet for as long as this arrangement has run.

You have four meals in that house and no chair in any of them, and a woman who feeds four people has never once been the one who should eat standing up. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen with somebody finishing a plate on her feet, and Acts 2:46 puts gladness in every one of those rooms without excluding anybody who was doing the serving.

What tonight is, at that table

So here is the assignment. Lay the table tonight and eat one meal at it with whoever is in the house.

Pick one shift. Not all four. Pick the one that is easiest, probably the seven o'clock, and for that one, lay the table and sit down and eat with them.

Two places. Yours and theirs. Actually eat, rather than having something later standing up, which means putting some aside for yourself before it gets served, and that is the only planning this requires.

You are laying it for two rather than waiting for four, and a table with two people at it has never once been a smaller table than one with four. Acts 2:46 describes small numbers eating in scattered rooms as the ordinary thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that kitchen with two places going down.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: stay sitting when they finish. Do not get up to start the next shift the moment their plate is empty. Three minutes, sitting, after the food is gone.

Those three minutes are the entire thing. Everybody in that house has had a mother who serves them and nobody has had one who sits with them, and three minutes changes which of those they remember.

You are staying three minutes rather than starting the next one, and three minutes at a table has never once been time taken from anything. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with two plates and a woman who did not get up, and Acts 2:46 measures the gladness in a room rather than the size of the group.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who ate standing up again tonight.

You are worth sitting down with, and a meal has never once needed to be impressive to be worth laying a table for. Nothing here asks you to get everybody round a table, because that is not available and suggesting it would be one more thing that does not happen. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who records scattered small meals as the ordinary shape, and Acts 2:46 says breaking bread from house to house.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have four meals in that house and no chair in any of them, and a woman who feeds four people has never once been the one who should eat standing up. Acts 2:46 puts the gladness in every room without excluding whoever was serving, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that table tonight.

One shift. Two places. And stay three minutes.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Calendar with no evening on it, you are real and you were never the thing that was actually missing. Acts 2:46 says breaking bread from house to house, so by the Holy Spirit I lay two places at one shift tonight and sit down in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of eating standing up, you have made me the only one in this house without a chair. Acts 2:46 puts the gladness in every one of those rooms without excluding whoever was serving, and by the Holy Spirit I am done finishing what other people left.
  3. Father, You recorded people eating from house to house in small scattered numbers and You measured the gladness rather than the attendance. Your word says breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, so by Your Spirit I sit down at one of those meals tonight, and I stay three minutes after.
