The Table Has Not Been A Table For Years

Paperwork, mail, and a box of chargers.

That is roughly the far end of it. There is also the thing that needs returning, the bag from a trip nobody unpacked, and a pile of something that belongs to somebody in that house and has no other home.

The near end still works. There is a cleared patch about the size of a plate, and that patch is where anybody eats, if anybody eats there at all.

And it did not happen on purpose. Nothing was ever put down as a decision. It is that a horizontal surface in a house acts like a drain, and this one has been draining for years.

Which means there has not been a meal at that table in longer than you would say out loud to anybody.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nothing here is about tidying your house.

Nobody is going to suggest a system, or a weekend, or a room by room approach, and nothing that follows requires anything to be put away permanently. A cleared table is not the same project as a clear house and confusing them is exactly why nothing has happened.

Let us rise up and build

There is a line in Nehemiah about starting something in a place that had been in that state for a long time, and the notable thing is the length of the sentence.

And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work. (Nehemiah 2:18, King James Version)

Let us rise up and build.

Five words, and then it is happening. There is no survey in that verse, no phased plan, and no discussion of how the walls got into that condition in the first place.

And the condition had been there for a long time. Everybody involved had walked past it for years.

You are looking at a long condition ended by a short sentence, and years of something being one way has never once required a long plan to change it. Nehemiah 2:18 goes from five words to hands already strengthened, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who eats off a patch the size of a plate.

And notice what the next clause says: so they strengthened their hands for this good work.

The strengthening comes after the deciding. Not before it. Nobody in that verse waited to feel capable and then began, and the order is the opposite of the one most people assume.

You have the strengthening on the far side of the deciding, and waiting to feel ready has never once been how anything in that verse got started. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has walked past that table for years, and Nehemiah 2:18 puts the saying first and the strengthened hands second.

The table and the house are two different jobs

Here is the practical half, and it is one separation.

Clearing that table has been sitting in your head inside a much larger job. It is filed with the house, and the house is enormous, and anything filed with the house does not get started on a Tuesday.

But the table is not the house. It is one surface, and everything on it can go somewhere else in about four minutes, and the somewhere else does not have to be correct.

That is the part that has been blocking this. Every time the table comes up, a second question arrives, which is where all of it should properly go, and that question is genuinely difficult and has no quick answer, and it has been vetoing the first one for years.

You were being stopped by a second question rather than the first one, and where something should properly go has never once had to be answered before a surface could be cleared. Nehemiah 2:18 has five words and then strengthened hands with nothing in between, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has been holding a whole house in her head.

And here is the second half, which will feel wrong and is the entire instruction. Put it in a box.

One box, or a bag, or two. Everything off that table, into it, without sorting, and the box goes in a corner or a cupboard or under the stairs. It is not solved. It is moved, and moved is enough tonight, and the box can be dealt with in six weeks or never.

Nothing is being thrown away and nothing is being decided. The only thing happening is that a table becomes a table again in four minutes.

You have four minutes and a box rather than a decision to make about every item, and a thing moved rather than sorted has never once stopped a table being laid on. The Spirit of God is the one in that room with somebody holding a box, and Nehemiah 2:18 gets to strengthened hands without a survey.

What tonight is, at that table

So here is the assignment. Lay the table tonight and eat one meal at it with whoever is in the house.

Box first, four minutes, no sorting. Then wipe it, which takes thirty seconds and is the moment the whole thing turns over, because a wiped table looks like a table and a cleared one still looks like a surface.

Then lay it. Places for however many people are in that house, properly, with plates and cutlery and a glass each.

You are turning a surface back into a table rather than solving a house, and four minutes and a cloth has never once been the same job as sorting anything out. Nehemiah 2:18 moves from a sentence to strengthened hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that room with a woman wiping a table down.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: whoever is in that house tonight is the right number. If that is three people, lay three. If it is one, lay one, and sit at it by yourself, and that is a full evening and not a rehearsal for a better one.

Do not wait for the week when everybody is in. You have been waiting for that week for years, and it is not the reason the table is covered, and it is not going to be the reason it gets cleared.

You have the right number in that house tonight, and a table laid for whoever is actually home has never once been laid for too few. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with however many chairs are pulled out, and Nehemiah 2:18 begins with the people who were standing there rather than with the ones who might arrive.
