I Blamed The Stove

It was the stove.

That is what you said, and you said it quickly, before anybody had time to form an opinion. The burner runs hot on that side. It has done this before. There is something wrong with the regulator.

And some of that is even true. That burner probably does run hot.

But you know what happened. You were not watching it. You went to do something else for two minutes and came back and it had caught, and the stove had nothing to do with any of it.

And the sentence arrived so fast. That is the part that has stayed. Not the burned pan, which nobody cared about. The speed.

Because a man who has a reason ready that fast has had a lot of practice, and you have been sitting with that quietly since.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

That moment was genuinely uncomfortable and nothing here is going to lecture you about honesty.

Standing in a kitchen with something ruined and people about to notice is a bad small feeling, and the sentence was a rescue. Rescues are not moral failures. What follows is not an accusation, and nobody here is going to ask you to confess anything to anybody.

The man said, the woman whom thou gavest me

There is a moment in Genesis where somebody is asked a direct question and answers with a reason.

And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest me to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. (Genesis 3:12, King James Version)

The woman whom thou gavest me.

It is the first recorded instance of this and it happens about five minutes after the first opportunity. That is worth having, because it tells you how old and how ordinary this reflex is: it is not a flaw in you, it is a flaw in everybody, and it has been operating since the beginning.

And notice he does not lie. Everything in that sentence is factually accurate. She did give him some. The whole thing is true and it is still a reason arriving where an answer should be.

You are running something as old as the first conversation, and a reason that is factually true has never once been a fault you invented. Genesis 3:12 has the reflex appear at the first opportunity in the whole book, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who said it was the stove.

And look at what the question actually was.

God asks him what he has done. He does not ask why, and he does not ask whose fault it was, and the answer that comes back is to a question nobody asked.

That is exactly what happened in your kitchen. Nobody asked, and nobody was going to, and the room had no charge in it at all, and the defense arrived anyway.

You were answering a question nobody asked, and a defense that arrives before an accusation has never once meant there was an accusation. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who has been sitting with how fast that sentence came, and Genesis 3:12 answers a what with a why.

The speed is the information

Here is the practical half, and it is one observation rather than a correction.

The speed tells you something and it is not what it has been taken to mean. It has been read as evidence about your character: a man who lies easily.

Here is the other reading. A sentence that arrives that fast is a defense that has been kept loaded, and defenses get kept loaded by people who have been criticized. Not recently, necessarily. But somewhere, for long enough that having a reason ready became automatic.

That is not a character flaw. That is a scar behaving exactly as a scar behaves.

You were carrying a loaded defense rather than a dishonest character, and a reflex that fast has never once been assembled in the present. Genesis 3:12 has the reflex appear in a man the first time he is ever questioned, and the Holy Spirit is the one with somebody who has been reading a scar as a fault.

And here is the second half, which is the way out, and it is small. Nobody needs to be told the truth about the burner. That evening is over and going back to it would be strange and would not help anybody.

What is available is different: tell the story once, to one person, without the stove in it. Not a correction of the record. Just the story, with the actual cause, and see what happens in the telling.

You have one telling available rather than a confession to make, and a story told once without the defense has never once needed an audience to be the right size. The Spirit of God is the one with a man about to leave a burner out of a story, and Genesis 3:12 shows the reflex plainly without anybody needing to go back and revise anything.

What this week is, with one person

So here is the assignment, and it is not cooking. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you, and leave the stove out of it.

One person who was not there. Tell them about the two minutes. You went to do something else, you came back, it had caught. That is the whole story and it takes about eleven seconds and everybody alive has done it.

Leaving the stove out is the entire exercise. Watch for the pull to put it in, because it will arrive as you are speaking, and notice that the sentence works perfectly well without it.

You are telling it without the defense rather than confessing that you used one, and a story that stands up without a reason attached has never once needed one. Genesis 3:12 puts a true reason where a plain answer belonged, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a man leaving a burner out.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: let them laugh. They will, because two minutes away from a pan is the most universal kitchen story there is. And notice what does not happen. Nobody thinks less of you. That is the finding, and it is the one the loaded defense has never let you collect.

You are collecting a finding the defense never let you have, and a thing told plainly has never once cost what the reflex expected it to cost. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with a man who told it straight, and Genesis 3:12 records the reflex without condemning the man who used it.
