I Apologized Through The Whole Meal

This message is for the woman who served what she made and apologized for it with every mouthful, who wants to fail at this in front of somebody and stay in the room

You said sorry about nine times.

Once when you brought it in. Once when everybody sat down. Once when the first person picked up a fork, and then several more, spaced out, all the way through.

And each one was small. A little remark about how it had not worked, delivered lightly, with a face.

By about the fourth, something had changed at that table. Everybody was reassuring you. That became the job of the meal. And the conversation that would have happened did not happen, because there was a woman at the head of the table who needed something and everybody could feel it.

And then they left and you stood in the kitchen and it was not the food you were thinking about. It was the nine.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

That was genuinely uncomfortable and nothing here is going to skip past it.

Serving something you know is not right, to people whose good opinion you care about, is a horrible small feeling, and the apologizing was not vanity. It was an attempt to get ahead of what you thought they were thinking, which is what almost everybody does, and it is worth understanding rather than being told off for.

I Apologized Through The Whole Meal

He will rejoice over thee with singing

There is a line in Zephaniah about how God is toward somebody, and the two halves of it do not sound like they belong together.

He will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17, King James Version)

He will rest in his love.

Rest is a strange word to use about somebody's feeling toward you. It means settled. It means there is nothing further being worked out, no ongoing assessment, no position being revised depending on how an evening goes.

And the other half is singing, which is the least restrained thing a person does.

You are being rested in rather than assessed, and an evening where the food was wrong has never once been an evening where anybody's position moved. Zephaniah 3:17 has the love resting rather than recalculating, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman standing in a kitchen after everybody left.

And notice there is no mention anywhere of anything being deserved.

The verse does not describe a good day. It does not say he will rejoice when things have gone well, and it attaches no conditions of any kind. The singing is simply the disposition, permanently, regardless of what happened at six o'clock.

You have a permanent disposition rather than a reaction to an evening, and joy over somebody has never once been the kind of thing that gets adjusted by a meal. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has been counting her own apologies, and Zephaniah 3:17 sets no conditions anywhere on the resting or the singing.

What the nine apologies actually did

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction, and it is not a scolding.

Each apology was a small attempt to get in front of a judgment. If you say it first, they cannot think it, and if they cannot think it then the evening is survivable. That is the mechanism and it is entirely understandable.

Here is what it did instead. It told everybody at that table that there was something to apologize for, which most of them had not noticed, and then it asked them to manage it. Nine times.

So the thing you were trying to prevent was the thing you installed, and that is not a character flaw. It is the ordinary reverse gear of anxiety in a room, and it happens to almost everybody who has ever put food in front of people.

You were installing the very thing you were trying to prevent, and an apology offered in advance has never once stopped a room noticing something. Zephaniah 3:17 rests rather than assessing, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has been getting in front of a judgment nobody made.

And here is the second half, which is the part that stayed. The conversation that did not happen. That is the actual loss of that evening, and it is worth naming, because it is bigger than the food and you have not let yourself count it.

Those people came to be with you. What they got was an hour of reassuring the host. Nobody minded. And you have not had that evening, and that is a real thing to be sad about rather than embarrassed about, and sadness is a much better place to stand than shame.

You were losing an evening rather than a reputation, and a conversation that did not happen has never once been the same thing as people thinking less of you. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who can be sad about it rather than ashamed, and Zephaniah 3:17 puts the whole disposition beyond the reach of one night.

What this week is, with one person

So here is the assignment, and it is not cooking. Tell one person about the thing you ruined and let them laugh with you.

One person who was not there. And tell the funny half honestly: the nine. Count them out. That is the story and it is genuinely funny, and it is funny in the way that everybody recognizes, because at least half the people you know have done exactly this and could tell you their own number.

Do not tell it as a confession about anxiety. Tell it as a thing that happened at a table.

You are telling it as a story rather than as a symptom, and nine apologies counted out loud have never once sounded the way they felt at the time. Zephaniah 3:17 rests in love without weighing anything up, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that conversation with a woman counting to nine.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: let them laugh, and then say the other half, which is that you were sad about the conversation you did not get. Say that one plainly, without a face on it. The laugh handles the shame. The plain sentence handles the loss, and those are two different jobs and the evening needs both of them done.

You are doing both jobs rather than only the easy one, and a loss said plainly has never once needed to be funny before it could be put down. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with a woman saying the plain half, and Zephaniah 3:17 joins resting and singing in one line.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who stood in her kitchen afterward thinking about the nine.

You are still the same woman you were before you served it, and one ruined meal has never once been a verdict on you. Nothing here tells you off for apologizing, because that was an attempt to get ahead of what you thought they were thinking. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who settles a disposition that a meal cannot move, and Zephaniah 3:17 puts the resting and the singing in one line with no conditions on either.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were losing an evening rather than a reputation, and a conversation that did not happen has never once been the same thing as people thinking less of you. Zephaniah 3:17 attaches no conditions at all to the resting or the singing, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that conversation this week.

Count the nine out loud. Then say the plain half.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Nine small apologies at that table, you were trying to get ahead of a judgment nobody made. Zephaniah 3:17 puts the resting and the singing in one line, so by the Holy Spirit I tell one person the whole story this week and count them out in the name of Jesus.
  2. Evening I did not get to have, you are a loss and you are not a disgrace. Zephaniah 3:17 attaches no conditions at all to the singing, and by the Holy Spirit I am done standing in shame where sadness was the honest place.
  3. Father, You said You rest in Your love and rejoice with singing, and You set no conditions on either of them anywhere. Your word sets the resting and the singing side by side and attaches nothing to either, so by Your Spirit I tell it out loud this week, and I let somebody laugh, and I say the plain half too.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
