Two Years Of Watching And Never Once Cooking

There is a folder.

It has a name like Recipes, or Later, or something you meant to rename. And in it there are hundreds of saved videos, each one about four minutes long, each one showing a pair of hands doing something efficient with an onion.

You have watched a great many of them. Several hundred hours, if anybody did the arithmetic, which nobody has.

And you have cooked none of them.

Not one. In two years, not a single thing in that folder has left the phone and appeared in a pan in your kitchen.

And the strange part is that it feels like progress while it is happening. You finish one of those videos and there is a small sense of having gained something. You know now. You have seen it done. Something moved.

Then the evening ends and you eat what you always eat.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nobody in this article thinks a man your age should already know how to do this.

There is no age at which not knowing becomes shameful. And nobody is going to laugh at the folder either, because the folder is not a character defect. It is a very ordinary thing that happens when watching and doing get wired to the same feeling, and almost everybody alive has a version of it about something.

Be ye doers of the word

There is a line in James that puts its finger on exactly this, and it is not gentle about it.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22, King James Version)

Deceiving your own selves.

That is the sharp part. Not disobeying. Not failing. Deceiving, which is a word about being convinced of something untrue, and the untrue thing is that hearing has already accomplished what doing would have.

Which is precisely what happens in that folder. The watching produces the feeling of the doing, and the feeling is genuine, and nothing has moved.

You are being handed the name for something rather than being told off for it, and a sense of progress from watching has never once been the same event as a thing being done. James 1:22 calls hearing without doing a self deception rather than a moral failure, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody four hundred videos into a folder.

And look at what James does not say.

He does not say stop hearing. There is no instruction to delete the folder, and no suggestion that the watching was wasted or that the man should feel foolish about the time.

He says be doers as well. The correction is an addition, not a subtraction, and that matters for a man who is about to try to fix this by deleting an app.

You have permission to keep everything you have watched, and the correction here has never once required anybody to throw away what they learned. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has been waiting to be scolded about a folder, and James 1:22 adds doing to hearing rather than condemning the hearing.

Watching is not the rehearsal, it is the substitute

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction. Watching feels like preparation, and it functions as a replacement, and the difference is invisible from the inside.

Preparation would be watching a thing and then doing it within a day or two, while the watching is still attached to a plan. What actually happens is watching, then a feeling of readiness, then the feeling fading over about nine hours, then watching again to get the feeling back.

That is a loop, and it is a comfortable one, and it can run for years without anybody noticing because every individual evening inside it looks reasonable.

And here is the thing that will annoy you, because it is so much smaller than the two years. The cure is not more information. It is one evening of worse information and actual hands. The first thing you cook will be nothing like the videos, and that is not a problem to be solved with more videos.

You were collecting readiness rather than building it, and several hundred hours of watching has never once been the same thing as one evening of doing it badly. James 1:22 names the gap between hearing and doing precisely, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man who has been running a loop for two years without seeing it.

And one more thing, which is the actual instruction.

Do not watch anything tonight. Not one. Not even a short one to remind yourself, because the short one is the loop and it will take the evening.

Go to the kitchen with what is in your head already, which after two years is a great deal more than you think, and find out what survived.

You have two years of watching already inside you, and going in without checking has never once meant going in empty handed. The Spirit of God is the one standing with somebody who closed the phone and opened a cupboard, and James 1:22 puts the weight on the doing rather than on more preparation.

What tonight is

So here is the assignment. Cook one thing tonight without watching anything first, and eat it sitting down.

Tonight. One thing. Keep it plain: eggs with something in them. Rice with an egg on it. Pasta with butter and cheese and a lot of pepper. Do not open the folder and do not go out and get anything, and use whatever is in that kitchen now.

It may not be good, and it will almost certainly not look like the videos. That is expected, and it is information about a first attempt rather than information about you.

You are cooking for one evening and not for a camera, and food that looks nothing like a video has never once been the wrong food. James 1:22 weighs the doing rather than the resemblance of anything to anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that stove with a man who has closed the folder.

Then the second half, which is the one that does the work. Eat it sitting down, at a table, on a plate, not standing at the counter with the pan and not with the phone in your other hand. Standing at a counter with a screen going is how a man eats something that does not count, and this is the first thing out of that folder in two years and it is going to be treated as a meal.

You are finishing something tonight rather than preparing for it, and a meal eaten at a table with the phone down has never once needed a video to make it real. The Holy Spirit is the one at that table with a plate on it, and James 1:22 puts doing and hearing side by side and names which one moves.
