My Kids Have Never Seen Me Cook

They have seen you order it.

They have seen you on the phone doing the voice, and they have seen you meet somebody at the door, and they have seen you open a box and put it on the table, and they think that is ordinary because for them it is.

What they have not seen is you at that stove with a pan in front of you.

Not once. Not in the whole of their lives. If somebody asked either of them what their father cooks, there would be a pause, and then one of them would say something kind and slightly wrong, and you would hear about it afterward and feel it in your chest for a week.

And it is not that you do not provide. You provide relentlessly. Everything in that house is there because of something you did.

It is that there is a particular room in it that you have never once been competent in, and the two people whose opinion matters most to you live in that house and can see.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nobody in this article thinks a father should have known how to do this already.

There is no age at which not knowing becomes shameful, and there is no version of fatherhood that requires a man to arrive knowing. You were not taught. Then you were busy. Then the years went by the way years do.

That is a fact about how a life ran. It is not a fact about what your hands can do.

When thou sittest in thine house

There is an instruction in Deuteronomy about teaching children, and the striking thing is where it puts the teaching.

And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 11:19, King James Version)

When thou sittest in thine house. When thou walkest by the way.

Not in a lesson. Not at a special time set aside for it with everybody sitting up straight. In the house, on the road, lying down, getting up, which is to say in the middle of the perfectly ordinary hours of a family that is simply going about its day.

You are already standing inside the hours this verse names, and an ordinary evening in a kitchen has never once been outside where God teaches a family. Deuteronomy 11:19 lists the sitting and the walking and the lying down and the rising up, and the Holy Spirit is the one present in a house at dinnertime.

And notice what that does to the question of competence.

The verse does not require the man to be impressive. It requires him to be present and talking while life happens around him. The teaching rides along on the ordinary, and the ordinary is precisely what a kitchen is.

You are being asked for presence in an ordinary hour rather than mastery of a room, and never having cooked in front of your children has never once disqualified a father from anything. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been dreading a stove in his own house, and Deuteronomy 11:19 puts the teaching inside the sitting and the walking and the rising up.

And there is a second thing in it, which is easy to miss.

What the children watch is not a finished performance. It is a man doing something in front of them. That is the whole mechanism. They are learning what an adult looks like when he does a thing, and a man doing a thing badly and staying at it is a far better lesson than a man who never does it at all.

You have something worth them seeing tonight even if the food is poor, and a first attempt in front of a child has never once been a worse teacher than an absence. Deuteronomy 11:19 sets the whole thing inside ordinary hours rather than prepared ones, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a father about to be watched.

The fear is about being seen, not about the food

Here is the practical half, and it is a correction about what is actually frightening.

The food is not the problem. Alone in that house tonight, a man could stand at a stove and make a mess of something and nobody would ever know, and the stakes would be roughly zero.

The stakes are that they are in the room.

You have children in the room rather than judges in a gallery, and two people who love you watching you try has never once been the same thing as being assessed. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen with a father and two children in it, and Deuteronomy 11:19 puts the teaching where the family already is instead of somewhere prepared.

And underneath that is a specific fear, which is worth saying out loud because unsaid it stays enormous: that they will see you not knowing something, and that something about how they see you will shift.

Here is what actually happens instead.

A child who watches a parent try something and struggle with it learns that trying is a thing adults do. A child who only ever sees a parent do the things he is already good at learns that a person should only do what he is already good at, and that lesson will cost them for the rest of their lives.

Nothing about their respect is at risk tonight. What is happening is that they get handed something a father cannot hand them any other way.

You were never going to teach that by being good at everything, and a father struggling in front of his children has never once cost him anything he was afraid of losing. Deuteronomy 11:19 has the teaching happen in the middle of the ordinary rather than out of sight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man whose children can see him from the table.

And one more thing, which matters.

Do not announce it. Do not say tonight I am going to cook, as though a ceremony were starting. That makes it an event, and if the event goes badly it becomes a story in that family.

Just cook. Let them notice.

You have permission to start without a speech, and an announcement has never once made a meal go better than simply beginning it. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen while nobody makes a thing of it, and Deuteronomy 11:19 sets the teaching inside the sitting and the walking, unannounced and ongoing.

What tonight looks like with them in the room

So here is the assignment, and both halves are the assignment.

Cook one thing tonight with your children in the room, and eat it sitting down with them.

Tonight. One thing. Keep it small: eggs with something in them. Pasta with butter and cheese and pepper. Rice with an egg on it. Do not go out and get anything, and use what is already in that kitchen.

It may not be good. That is expected, and it is information about a first attempt, and your children care far less about the quality of that food than you do.

You are giving them an evening rather than a dish, and food that came out poorly has never once been the part of a night a child keeps. Deuteronomy 11:19 sets the teaching in the ordinary hours rather than in the quality of anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that stove with a man and a child beside him.

If one of them wants to stand next to you, let them. If one of them wants to stir, let them stir badly. The point is not efficiency, and the point is definitely not the meal.

Then the second half. Eat it sitting down with them, at a table, on plates.

You are sitting down with them over something you made rather than something that arrived, and a meal at a table has never once needed to be impressive to be remembered. The Holy Spirit is the one at that table with a father and his children, and Deuteronomy 11:19 puts the teaching in the hours when a family is simply at home together.
