My Sister Is The One Who Cooks

She is the one who cooks.

Everybody knows it. It is not even said any more, it is simply how the family arranges itself, and has for about thirty years. At every gathering she is in the kitchen and you are carrying things, and nobody assigned that in writing and nobody has ever questioned it.

You do other things. You are the one who remembers, or the one who drives, or the one who handles the difficult phone call nobody else will make. The family gave you a job too and you do it well.

But there is a moment, and it happens two or three times a year, where somebody says something like oh, she is the cook, not you, said warmly, meant kindly, and something in your chest goes slightly flat.

And then the moment passes and you carry the plates through.

The odd part is that you have never tested it. Not once in three decades have you stood at a stove and found out whether the arrangement is true, because the arrangement has always been there and there has always been somebody better in the room.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nobody in this article thinks a woman your age should already be able to do this.

There is no age at which not knowing becomes shameful, and there is no version of this where you are behind. A family sorted itself when you were children, and the sorting stuck, and that is a fact about a household and not a finding about you.

God hath set the members every one of them

There is a line in First Corinthians about a body and its parts, and the striking thing is who does the setting.

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. (1 Corinthians 12:18, King James Version)

Hath God set the members. As it hath pleased him.

The setting is God's, in the text, and it is done according to what pleases God. Which means the arrangement of who does what in a body is a thing God is involved in, and not a thing settled by whoever was quickest in a kitchen in nineteen ninety two.

And that cuts two ways, and both of them matter here. It means your sister's gift is real and not a rivalry. It also means the label your family put on you was put there by a family, and a family is not the one doing the setting in that verse.

You are set in a body by God rather than sorted by a household, and a label your family agreed on has never once been the same thing as an assignment from heaven. First Corinthians 12:18 puts the setting in God's hands and makes it a matter of what pleases him, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman carrying plates through from somebody else's kitchen.

And read the phrase every one of them.

Not the notable ones. Not the ones the family talks about. Every single part, set deliberately, which includes the one that was quietly given the carrying job at a young age and never asked whether that was the whole of it.

You have been set deliberately and not left over, and being handed the smaller role in a family has never once meant there was nothing else in you. The Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody who has been the other sister for thirty years, and First Corinthians 12:18 says every one of them, with no part treated as a remainder.

The role is old and it has never been tested

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction. The claim is not that you cannot cook. The claim is that the cook in this family is somebody else, and those are entirely different sentences that have been living in the same drawer.

The first would be a finding, and findings come from evidence. The second is a position in a family, and positions come from whoever was standing where when everybody was small.

Ask yourself what evidence actually exists. Not impressions, evidence. Meals attempted and failed. And the honest answer is that there is very little, because the arrangement has kept you from generating any.

That is what makes this so easy to leave alone for another decade. There is nothing to argue with. A role is not a claim, so it cannot be refuted, and it simply sits there being the shape of the family.

You were handed a position and not a verdict, and a role assigned in childhood has never once been tested against anything you can actually do. First Corinthians 12:18 hands the setting of the parts to God rather than to the household, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has never once stood at her own stove and found out.

And one more thing, which matters more than the pan.

Do not tell them. Not your sister, not your mother, not the family group thread. Not yet and possibly not ever.

The instinct here is to announce it, because an announcement would finally correct the record. But an announcement makes this about them, and turns a Tuesday evening into a case being argued. This is not a case. It is eggs.

You have permission to do this quietly and tell nobody, and a meal cooked without an audience has never once counted for less than one cooked to prove something. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen while nobody is watching, and First Corinthians 12:18 sets the members as it pleases God rather than as it convinces a family.

What tonight is

So here is the assignment. Cook one thing tonight without telling your family, and eat it sitting down.

Tonight. One thing. Keep it genuinely plain: eggs with something in them. Rice with an egg on it. Pasta with butter and cheese and a lot of pepper. Do not go out and get anything, and do not pick something your sister makes, because then it becomes a comparison and the comparison is the whole trap.

It may not be good. That is expected, and it is information about a first attempt rather than a confirmation of anything anybody ever said at a table.

Then the second half. Eat it sitting down, at a table, on a plate. Not standing at the counter, and not while doing something else.

Sitting down is how a thing becomes an event that happened. Standing at a counter is how a woman eats something that does not count, and you have carried enough plates through for other people to be allowed one plate that is yours.

You are sitting down to something of your own rather than serving somebody else's, and a quiet meal has never once needed a family's agreement to be real. First Corinthians 12:18 says God set every one of the members deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that table with a plate that nobody else knows about.
