I Watched It Happen To Somebody Else

You were eight, and you saw the whole thing.

You were standing at about the height of the counter, which is why you saw it and the adults in the room did not, and you can still describe the exact order in which things happened.

You remember the sound more than the sight. You remember a particular adult going very calm in a way that frightened you more than shouting would have. You remember a towel.

And everybody was fine. That is the part that makes it hard to talk about. Nobody died and nobody lost anything and it became a story the family told for a while and then stopped telling.

But something in you filed it, and the filing is still there, and it has been thirty years.

So when there is a knife on a board in front of you, your body arrives at the counter before your mind does, already braced, already remembering a towel.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

This is a real fear and nothing here is going to treat it as excessive.

You were a child, and you watched somebody get hurt, and children do not have the equipment to put that in proportion. What is in you is not an overreaction. It is an accurate recording, made by somebody too small to file it anywhere else, and it has been doing its job faithfully for three decades.

Fear not, for I have called thee by thy name

There is a line in Isaiah that says fear not, and the reason attached to it is not what people expect.

But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. (Isaiah 43:1, King James Version)

I have called thee by thy name.

The reason not to be afraid is not that nothing bad happens. Nothing in the verse promises that, and the whole book it sits in is full of things that did happen to the people being spoken to.

The reason is a name, known and spoken. It is about who is holding you rather than about what is out there, and that distinction is the whole of this.

You are spoken to by name rather than reassured about the world, and a fear that came from something that genuinely happened has never once been answered by pretending it did not. Isaiah 43:1 gives a name rather than a guarantee, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who can still describe a kitchen from thirty years ago.

And notice the verse is addressed to people with a history.

He that created thee, he that formed thee, I have redeemed thee. Every one of those is backward looking. The whole sentence is spoken to somebody who has already been through things, by somebody who was there for all of it.

It is not said to a person with no memories. It is said to a person with plenty.

You have a history that is fully known rather than one you have to explain, and a thing you watched at eight has never once been invisible to the one who formed you. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman whose body arrives at a counter already braced, and Isaiah 43:1 speaks to somebody with a past and names them anyway.

What you saw was an accident, and accidents have causes

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction. What you watched was not a knife being dangerous in general. It was a specific accident with specific causes, and your eight year old mind stored the outcome without any of the causes attached.

That is what children do. They record what happened and they do not record why, because why requires information nobody gives an eight year old.

So the file in you says: knife, blood, towel, calm voice. It does not say: somebody was in a hurry, or somebody reached across, or a board was on a wet surface, or a blade was blunt and slipped. And those are the sorts of things that actually cause it.

Which means the lesson your body learned was knives are dangerous, when the available lesson was hurrying is dangerous, and those two lead to completely different evenings.

You were taught the wrong lesson by an accurate memory, and an outcome stored without its causes has never once been the same thing as understanding what happened. Isaiah 43:1 addresses somebody who has been through things by name rather than by their file, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman holding a thirty year old recording.

And here is the second half, which is the instruction, and it is about speed. Everything that goes wrong with a blade goes wrong quickly. Every single cause on that list is a version of fast, and slow is not merely a comfort measure for a frightened person. Slow is the actual safety measure, used by every professional, and it is the thing that was missing in the room you were standing in.

So the fear in you is not asking for the wrong thing. It is asking for care, which is correct, and it has only ever been offered avoidance.

You have a fear asking for the right thing, and going slowly has never once been the timid version of doing this. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen with somebody about to move at a speed she chooses, and Isaiah 43:1 grounds the fear not in a name rather than in a promise about circumstances.

What tonight is, with that knife

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately small. Pick up the knife tonight, cut one thing slowly, and put it away.

Tonight. One thing. One cut is enough. Put the board flat on a dry surface, put the thing on it, hold it with the other hand well back, and go slowly enough that your attention stays on your fingers. Do not chop. There is no technique in this article and there is no correct speed except the one that keeps you watching.

It may be uncomfortable. That is expected, and discomfort is not danger, and you are allowed to feel all of it while your hands do the thing anyway.

You are doing the one thing that was missing from the room you remember, and slow has never once been the frightened version of anything. Isaiah 43:1 calls somebody by name in the middle of a history, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that board with a woman who was eight in a kitchen once.

Then the second half, which is the one that does the work. Put it away yourself. Wash it, dry it, and return it to the drawer, so that your hand goes to that handle a second time when there is no task and nothing at stake. The first time can be explained as necessity. The second time is a choice, and the choice is the part that moves.

You are choosing it the second time rather than enduring it the first, and a knife put away by the hand that used it has never once been the same event as one left on a board. The Spirit of God is the one at that drawer with a clean knife going back, and Isaiah 43:1 says thou art mine to somebody who remembers a great deal.
