I Cannot CookExodus 31:3

I Can Fix A Car And Not A Meal

This message is for the man who can build and repair anything and freezes at a stove, who wants to start something he believes he is incapable of

You can rebuild a gearbox.

You have taken apart things with hundreds of parts in them and laid those parts out in order on a sheet and put every single one back where it belonged. You can look at a noise and tell somebody what it is. People bring you things.

And you cannot make a meal.

Not will not. Cannot, in the sense that you stand in a kitchen with everything a meal needs already in it and feel a specific blankness arrive, and then you find something else to do.

Which makes no sense on paper and makes perfect sense in the room, and nobody has ever explained to you why.

Here is a guess. Everything you are good at has a right answer that reveals itself. The part fits or it does not. The noise stops or it does not. The work tells you.

Food does not do that. Food asks how much, and how long, and whether that looks done, and every one of those questions comes back with it depends, and it depends is the one answer your whole working life has trained you to distrust.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

Nobody in this article thinks a man with your hands should already know how to do this.

There is no age at which not knowing becomes shameful, and being excellent at one thing has never obliged anybody to be excellent at another. You were taught a trade and you were not taught this, and those are two facts about an apprenticeship rather than one fact about you.

I Can Fix A Car And Not A Meal

Filled with the spirit of God in all manner of workmanship

There is a man in Exodus given a skill directly, and what he is given is not spiritual in the way people expect.

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship. (Exodus 31:3, King James Version)

In all manner of workmanship.

Cutting stone. Setting it. Working metal, working wood, making a thing with hands out of material that does not care about anybody's sincerity. And the text puts the Spirit of God directly inside that, with no apology and no sense that it is a lesser category of gift.

Which means the hands you already have are not a separate department from anything God is doing. They were never the worldly part of you that the spiritual part tolerates.

You are a man whose workmanship is named in Scripture as a gift, and skill in one material has never once been a bar to skill in another. Exodus 31:3 puts the Spirit of God inside cutting and setting and building rather than beside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody standing blankly in his own kitchen.

And look at the word wisdom sitting next to workmanship in that list.

Wisdom is the word for judgment in situations where there is no single right answer. It is precisely the it depends skill. And the verse hands it to the craftsman as part of the same filling, in the same breath as the knowledge and the understanding.

Which means the thing you think you lack, the tolerance for a question that answers it depends, is not missing equipment. It is in the list.

You have been handed judgment as well as technique, and a question that answers it depends has never once been outside what you were built to handle. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who has been calling a whole room a mystery, and Exodus 31:3 names wisdom and workmanship in one filling and one sentence.

The blankness is a missing first step, not a missing capacity

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction.

The blankness is not your mind refusing the task. It is your mind looking for a starting point and not finding one, because every other skill in those hands starts with an obvious first move and this one does not appear to.

When a car comes in, you know where your hand goes first. When you walk into a kitchen, there are about nine plausible places to start and none of them announces itself, and a mind trained on obvious first moves simply stalls.

So here is the first move, and it is smaller than the one you use at work.

You are one movement away from being started rather than one qualification away, and a room with no obvious opening move has never once been a room you could not work in. Exodus 31:3 fills a man for the work of his hands and not for a theory about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody reaching for a burner.

Put a pan on the heat. That is it. That is the equivalent of getting the thing up on the ramp, and the rest of the evening will suggest itself once there is something hot in the room.

The other thing worth knowing is that cooking has tolerances, exactly like everything else you do. Too much salt is a real fault. A bit more onion than somebody else would use is not a fault at all, it is inside tolerance, and most of what makes a kitchen feel unanswerable is a man applying a machining tolerance to a thing built with a wide one.

You were reading a wide tolerance as a missing specification, and a range of correct answers has never once meant there was no right way to begin. The Holy Spirit is the one with somebody who has stalled for want of an obvious first move, and Exodus 31:3 gives wisdom and workmanship together to a man working real material.

And one more thing, which matters.

Do not research this. The instinct, for a man who solves things properly, is to go and understand the whole system before touching it, and in this one case that instinct is the trap. Four hours of reading will produce a more informed man standing in exactly the same spot.

Put the pan on. Learn it the way you learned the trade, which was with your hands and in the wrong order and slightly too fast.

You have learned harder things than this by doing them badly first, and an hour of reading has never once taught a pair of hands anything. Exodus 31:3 fills a man for the work itself rather than for the study of it, and the Spirit of God is the one standing with somebody putting a pan on a burner tonight.

What tonight is

So here is the assignment.

Cook one thing tonight, however simple, and eat it sitting down.

Tonight. One thing. Keep it genuinely plain: eggs with something in them. Rice with an egg on it. Pasta with butter and cheese and a lot of pepper.

Do not go out and get anything. Use what is in that kitchen right now, which is more than you think.

It may not be good. That is fine and expected, and it is data from a first run rather than a judgment on the operator, and nobody in your trade writes off a machine on its first run.

You were trained to read a first run as information rather than as a verdict, and a poor result on an opening attempt has never once condemned the man doing it. The Spirit of God is the one at that stove with a first run going on, and Exodus 31:3 names the workmanship as a filling from God rather than a test of the worker.

Then the second half, which is the half that does the work. Eat it sitting down, at a table, on a plate, not standing at the counter with the pan.

Here is why. Standing at the counter is how a man eats something that does not count. It is refuelling, taken fast, with no acknowledgment that a job was done. And a job was done tonight.

You are signing off a job rather than grabbing fuel between tasks, and a meal eaten standing up has never once been allowed to count as finished work. Exodus 31:3 treats the work of hands as something God fills a man for, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that table with a plate on it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who walked out of his own kitchen again tonight.

You are able to learn this, and being skilled somewhere else has never once meant you could not. Nothing here says a man with your hands should already know, and there is no age at which not knowing becomes shameful. Exodus 31:3 puts the Spirit of God inside all manner of workmanship, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes that blankness off a man at his own stove.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were filled for the work of your hands and that filling was never restricted to one material, and a kitchen has never once been a different kind of room from a workshop. The Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that stove tonight, and Exodus 31:3 names wisdom and understanding and knowledge alongside the workmanship.

Put the pan on. That is the ramp.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Blankness that arrives in that kitchen, you are a missing first move and not a missing capacity. Exodus 31:3 says filled with the spirit of God in all manner of workmanship, so by the Holy Spirit I put a pan on the heat tonight and I cook one thing in the name of Jesus.
  2. Idea that my hands belong in one room, you have kept a skilled man out of his own kitchen for years. Exodus 31:3 names wisdom in the same breath as the workmanship, and by the Holy Spirit I am done treating a wide tolerance as a locked door.
  3. Father, You filled a craftsman for cutting and setting and building and You called it the work of Your own Spirit. Your word says in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, so by Your Spirit I begin tonight, badly and in the wrong order, and I sit down with what I make.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
