I Cannot CookIsaiah 50:4

He Always Did It And Now I Have To

This message is for the woman of fifty two whose husband cooked every meal for thirty years, who wants to start something she believes she is incapable of

He did it. For thirty years, he did it.

Not in a showy way. He was not a man who talked about food. He came in, he put a bag down, and about forty minutes later there was something on the table, and that was simply how the evenings went in your house for three decades.

And you did other things. You paid everything, you ran the calendar, you kept every relationship in that family alive by remembering who needed calling. Nobody in your marriage was carrying less than anybody else.

But the kitchen was his, and you let it be his, and it never once occurred to either of you that this was a problem.

Now you stand in front of an open freezer at six in the evening and you close it again without taking anything out.

And you go and eat toast. Or you eat cereal at the counter with your coat still on. Or you do not eat, and you tell yourself you were not hungry, which is a lie you have become quite good at telling.

Fifty two. And the first meal you ever cook for yourself is still ahead of you, and it feels enormous, and there is nobody in the house to see how long you stand in that doorway.

Let me say the first thing plainly, because I think somebody has already said the second thing to you and it did not help.

Nobody is going to suggest in this article that a woman of fifty two ought to know how to do this.

There is no age at which not knowing becomes shameful. There is no window that quietly closed while you were busy running everything else. And I am not going to hint at one in a warm voice, which is what the well meaning people around you have been doing since the funeral, or since he moved out, or since whatever it was that left you alone with that stove.

You were not taught, and then you did not need to learn, and those are two facts about a marriage. They are not facts about what you can do.

He Always Did It And Now I Have To

He wakeneth morning by morning

There is a line in Isaiah about being taught, and the striking thing about it is how ordinary it makes the teaching sound.

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. (Isaiah 50:4, King James Version)

The tongue of the learned. Given.

Not discovered. Not unlocked after somebody finally believed in themselves. Given, by God, to a person who did not have it before, which means there was a stretch of that man's life where he could not do the thing and that stretch was not a verdict on him.

And then look at the pace of it. He wakeneth morning by morning.

Morning by morning. Not all at once, not in a single overwhelming download, not in a weekend course that turns somebody into a different person. One morning, and then another morning after it.

That is the pace of the thing you are standing in front of, and you have been pricing it as though it had to happen tonight, all of it, completely, or it does not count.

You are being taught rather than tested, and a stretch of years where you did not need to know has never once meant you could not learn. Isaiah 50:4 says the tongue of the learned was given to somebody who did not have it, morning by morning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman standing in front of an open freezer at six in the evening.

And notice who the teaching is for, because that part gets skipped.

That he should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary. The learning is not so that the man can be impressive. It is so that he can say something useful to somebody tired.

Which is worth sitting with, because the version of cooking in your head is probably a performance: a table, a meal, other people, and you at the head of it doing something you cannot do. That is not what this is.

You have been handed an ordinary daily thing and not an examination, and the pace of it was always one morning and then another one. The Spirit of God is the one keeping that pace with somebody who has been dreading the whole of it in a single evening, and Isaiah 50:4 sets the teaching at morning by morning rather than all at once.

Thirty years is not a record of what you can do

Here is the practical half, and it is one correction.

Thirty years of not cooking has been turned into evidence, and you did the turning. That is the move, and it is the only thing genuinely standing in your way tonight.

The reasoning runs like this, underneath, where you do not say it out loud: if I could do this, I would have done it by now. Three decades is a long time to not do something. Therefore something about me must not be able to.

But that is not what those thirty years were. Those thirty years were a household in which somebody else handled the food, which is the most ordinary arrangement in the world, and which says precisely nothing about your hands, your attention or your capacity to follow a simple thing through.

You are the same competent woman who ran that entire household, and an arrangement about who cooked has never once said anything about your hands. Isaiah 50:4 hands the tongue of the learned to a person who did not have it, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has been treating three decades as a diagnosis.

And here is the part that will sound too small to matter, so read it slowly.

What you actually need to learn is not large. Heat a pan. Chop something without hurrying. Know roughly when a thing is done. Put salt on it. Do not walk away and start answering messages.

That is most of it. Everything else is variation, and nobody in the history of kitchens has started with the variations.

You are not standing at the bottom of a mountain. You are standing at the bottom of about six ordinary movements, and the reason you have not started is not that they are hard. It is that starting would mean finding out, and you have been treating the finding out as a sentence being passed.

You were never on trial in that room, and thirty years of an ordinary arrangement has never once been a report on what you can do. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has been reading her own marriage as evidence against herself, and Isaiah 50:4 has the learning given rather than earned.

And one more thing, which matters more than the pan.

You do not have to announce this. Not to your daughter, not to the friend who keeps offering to come over and show you. There is nothing to report yet, and turning a private ordinary act into a progress update is how this stops being yours.

You have permission to do this with nobody watching, and a first meal has never once needed a witness to have happened. Isaiah 50:4 sets the teaching at morning by morning, quietly and without an audience, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in the room whether or not anybody else is.

What tonight actually is

So here is the assignment, and both halves of it are the assignment.

Cook one thing tonight, however simple, and eat it sitting down at the table.

Tonight. One thing. And keep it genuinely small: eggs, with something in them. Rice with an egg on top of it. Pasta with butter and cheese and a lot of black pepper. Something on toast that at some point involved a pan.

Do not look up a recipe with a long list in it. Do not go out and get anything. Use what is in that kitchen right now, which is more than you think, because he shopped like a man who cooked and some of that is still in there.

You have everything this needs already in that room, and a short list has never once been a lesser meal than a long one. The Spirit of God is the one standing with somebody opening a cupboard tonight, and The teaching in Isaiah 50:4 is set at morning by morning rather than all at once.

It may not be good. That is fine, and it is expected, and it is information about the fifth minute of a skill rather than information about you.

Then the second half, which is the half that does the work. Eat it sitting down. At the table. On a plate. Not standing at the counter with the pan and a fork.

Here is why that matters. Standing at the counter is how a person eats something that does not count. It is fuel, taken fast, with no acknowledgment that anything happened. And this is the first meal you have ever made for yourself in your life, at fifty two, and it is going to be treated as a meal.

You are sitting down to something real rather than refuelling in a doorway, and a plate at a table has never once needed a second person at it to be a meal. Isaiah 50:4 gives the tongue of the learned to somebody who was weary, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sits down with a woman eating eggs at her own table.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who closed the freezer again on Tuesday.

You are able to learn this, and thirty years of not needing to has never once meant you could not. Nothing in this article says a woman of fifty two should already know, and there is no age at which this becomes shameful. Isaiah 50:4 says the tongue of the learned was given, morning by morning, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a thirty year verdict off a woman in her own kitchen.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were handed about six ordinary movements and not a mountain, and tonight was never an examination. The Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that stove this evening, and Isaiah 50:4 sets the teaching at one morning and then another one.

One thing. Tonight. And sit down at the table with it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Open freezer I close again every evening, you have been the end of my day for months and you are not deciding this one. Isaiah 50:4 says the tongue of the learned was given, morning by morning, so by the Holy Spirit I cook one thing tonight and I sit down at the table with it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Thirty years of an arrangement that suited us, you are not a record of what I can do. The word gives the learning to somebody who did not have it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading my own marriage as evidence against myself.
  3. Father, You gave the tongue of the learned to a man who was weary, and You set the pace of it at morning by morning. Your word says he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned, so by Your Spirit I start at the beginning tonight, and I make one thing, and I sit down with it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
