They Never Met Her

Nobody at that table knew her.

That is the strange arithmetic of it. There are people in your life now who are close to you, who will be in that room, and every single one of them arrived after she was already gone.

They know the name. They know she mattered. They have been kind about it in the ordinary way people are kind about somebody else's dead.

And you are going to put her food on a table in front of them.

Which is where it gets complicated, because you can already feel how it will go. Somebody will say it is good, and mean it, and the sentence will be about the food. And you will smile, and something in you will say quietly: you have no idea what you are eating.

That is not their fault and it is not resentment. It is just the particular loneliness of carrying a person into a room where nobody can see them.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything about a kitchen.

This is about her and the cooking is second.

Nothing here is going to tell you to explain her to everybody, and nothing here is going to tell you what she would have wanted. And if you read this to the end and decide not to make it, that is a complete and good ending and this article will say so.

What mean ye by these stones

There is a moment in Joshua where a pile of stones gets set up specifically for people who were not there.

That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? (Joshua 4:6, King James Version)

When your children ask, saying, What mean ye by these stones.

The stones are put down in full expectation that the next generation will not know what they are. That is not a failure in the plan. That is the plan.

The whole point of the pile is that somebody who was not there will one day stand next to it and ask, and the asking is the mechanism by which the thing travels.

You are setting something down for people who could not have been there, and a room full of people who never met her has never once been the wrong room to carry her into. Joshua 4:6 builds the not knowing directly into the design, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who can already hear how the evening will go.

And notice the sign is not self explanatory.

It is a heap of rocks. Anybody walking past would see stones. The meaning does not live in the object and it never did, and the verse is entirely relaxed about that, because the meaning arrives when somebody says it out loud in answer to a question.

An unexplained sign is not a failed sign. It is a sign waiting for its sentence.

You have something that was never going to explain itself, and a dish nobody at that table can read has never once been a thing that failed to carry her. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has been dreading a compliment about the food, and Joshua 4:6 puts the meaning in the answer rather than in the stones.

The dish was never going to do it on its own

Here is the second part, and it is one correction.

That food has been asked to do a job it cannot do. The hope, not quite conscious, has been that if you make it well enough, something of her will arrive in the room by itself and the people at the table will feel it without being told.

That will not happen, and it is not because your cooking is not good enough. A dish is a heap of stones. It carries nothing on its own to people who do not know the story.

And the disappointment you have been bracing for is real and is already scheduled, and it is not about the food, and no amount of getting it right would have prevented it.

You have been asking a dish to do the work of a sentence, and food on a table has never once been able to introduce somebody by itself. Joshua 4:6 makes the explaining a spoken act rather than a property of the object, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has been hoping a room would simply feel something.

And here is what is available instead, and it is smaller and it actually works. Say one sentence out loud before anybody eats. Not a speech. Not the story of her life, and not an explanation of what the dish means. One sentence with her name in it: this was my grandmother's, and her name was whatever her name was.

That is the answer to what mean ye by these stones. It is short, and somebody at that table will ask a question, and then she is in the room.

You have one sentence available rather than a speech nobody wants, and a name said out loud at a table has never once needed anything else to bring somebody into a room. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with a woman about to say a name, and Joshua 4:6 has the whole meaning arrive in an answer.

What this time is, at that table

So here is the assignment, and most of it is not cooking. Say her name out loud at that table, and make it this time or decide not to.

Before anybody eats. One sentence, in a normal voice, without apologizing for saying it. This was my grandmother's, and her name was hers. Then stop, and start eating, and do not fill the pause, because the pause is where the question comes from.

It will be difficult in a way that is out of proportion to eleven words. That is the point rather than an accident.

You are saying the sentence rather than waiting for the room to feel it, and a name spoken at a table has never once been too small a thing to carry somebody. Joshua 4:6 puts the sign and the sentence together and needs both, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that table with a woman saying a name out loud.

Then the second half, which is genuinely open. Make it this time, or decide not to. If you make it, expect somebody to say it is good and mean it about the food, and let that be what it is, because the sentence has already done the part the food could not. And if you decide not to, say her name at that table anyway, over whatever is actually on it. The name is the thing. The dish was always the stones.

You are carrying the name rather than the recipe, and a table with her name said over it has never once needed her food on it as well. The Spirit of God is the one at that table whichever way the food goes, and Joshua 4:6 keeps the meaning in the speaking.
