Feeding OthersActs 20:35

They Have Been Feeding Me For Months

This message is for the woman who has been fed by others for months and cannot bear to keep receiving, who wants to feed somebody without it being a performance

There are eleven containers and none of them are yours.

You have counted. They are stacked on the end of that counter, washed, waiting to go back, and some of them have been there long enough that you are no longer certain whose is whose.

People have been feeding you for months. Since whatever happened, happened. They have been extraordinary and you know it and you have said so.

And there is a thing that has been building underneath the gratitude that you have not said to anybody, which is that you cannot stand it any more.

Not the food. The direction. Every single one of those containers arrived across a line that only goes one way, and you have been on the receiving end of it for so long that you have started to feel like a situation rather than a person.

So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything practical.

This is not ingratitude and nothing here is going to treat it as ingratitude.

What you are feeling is not a failure to appreciate people. It is the perfectly ordinary human need to be somebody who gives things as well as somebody who gets them, and going months without that is genuinely hard, and nobody talks about it because saying it out loud sounds appalling.

They Have Been Feeding Me For Months

It is more blessed to give than to receive

There is a line in Acts about giving and receiving, and it is usually read as an instruction to be generous, which is only half of what it is doing.

Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35, King James Version)

More blessed to give than to receive.

Read it as a comparison rather than as a command, because that is what it is. It puts the two side by side and says one carries more blessing than the other.

Which means the position you are in, months of receiving, is the position the verse names as the lesser of the two. Not the wrong one. The lesser one, and you are in it, and the tiredness you feel is the verse being accurate about something.

You are in the position the verse itself calls the lesser one, and being tired of receiving has never once been the same thing as being ungrateful. Acts 20:35 compares the two rather than commanding one, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has counted eleven containers.

And notice it does not say receiving is bad.

It is blessed too. There is no condemnation anywhere for the person on the receiving end, and nothing in that verse suggests anybody should have refused what they were given.

You were right to take it. And you are right to want the other one now.

You have been right twice rather than wrong once, and taking what people brought has never once been the thing that disqualified you from giving. The Spirit of God is the one with somebody who has been on one side for months, and Acts 20:35 leaves both sides blessed and only ranks them.

What the eleven containers are actually asking for

Here is the practical half, and it is one observation about those people.

Every one of them wants their dish back. That is not a small logistical detail, it is the whole opening.

Because a container going back is a reason to be at somebody's door, and eleven of them is eleven reasons, and they have been sitting there as a pile of admin rather than as the only open invitation in that house.

And there is a version of returning a dish that changes the direction entirely: return it with something in it. That is not a grand gesture and it does not require an occasion. It is one dish, washed, with the thing you already make in it, handed back to the person whose it was.

You have eleven open doors rather than a pile of admin, and a container going home with something in it has never once been the same act as returning an empty one. Acts 20:35 ranks the giving above the receiving without condemning either, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman standing at the end of a counter.

And here is the second half, which is the part that will be difficult and is worth doing anyway. The person who brought it may resist. They may say you did not have to, or that you should be looking after yourself, and they will mean it kindly.

Do not accept the resistance. Say something short and true: I wanted to. That is the whole answer, and it holds, and after a couple of seconds they will take it, because there is nothing to argue with in a sentence that short.

You have a short sentence that holds, and a person who wanted to be the giver for once has never once needed permission to be. The Spirit of God is the one on that step with a woman handing a full dish back, and Acts 20:35 makes the giving the more blessed position without asking anybody to earn it.

What this month is, with one container

So here is the assignment. Invite one person for one simple meal this month and cook the thing you can already make.

And for this month, do it as a return. Pick one container. Just one, not eleven, because eleven is a project and one is an evening. Pick the person you would most like to see and take theirs first.

Make the thing you already make, put it in their dish, and take it round. Or if it is easier, ask them over and give it to them at your own table, which is the same act with the direction even clearer.

You are giving rather than settling an account, and a dish that went back full has never once been the same errand as one that went back empty. Acts 20:35 puts the blessing on the giving side, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that kitchen with a woman cooking for somebody else for the first time in months.

Then the part that does the work, and it is one instruction: do not explain why. Do not say anything about wanting to give something back, or about having taken so much, or about how much they have done. All of that turns the moment into an accounting, and accounting is exactly the thing that has been making you feel like a situation.

Hand it over. Say I made this for you. That is the whole sentence and there is nothing under it.

You are handing something over rather than settling up, and a gift with no explanation attached has never once been a repayment. The Spirit of God is the one at that door with a woman and a full container, and Acts 20:35 names the giving as blessed rather than as a debt discharged.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who looked at that counter again this morning.

You are able to feed people with what you can already cook, and hospitality has never once been the same as impressing anybody. Nothing here calls that feeling ingratitude, because it is the ordinary need to be somebody who gives as well as somebody who gets. It is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who ranks the two without condemning either, and Acts 20:35 says it is more blessed to give than to receive.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have been right twice rather than wrong once, and taking what people brought has never once disqualified you from giving. Acts 20:35 leaves the receiving blessed as well and only puts one above the other, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that door this month.

One container. Full. And no explanation.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Eleven containers on that counter, you are not a pile of admin and you were never a debt. Acts 20:35 says it is more blessed to give than to receive, so by the Holy Spirit I take one of you back full this month in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that I have become a situation, you are not ingratitude and you are what months on one side of a line does. Acts 20:35 calls the giving the more blessed of the two without condemning the receiving, and by the Holy Spirit I am done being only the one who gets.
  3. Father, You put giving above receiving and You never once called the receiving wrong or asked anybody to refuse what was brought. Your word says it is more blessed to give than to receive, so by Your Spirit I cook for somebody else this month, and I hand it over, and I explain nothing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
